The O2: Virgin Red releases VIP tickets for November concerts

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

A couple of months ago, Virgin Red signed a deal on a box at The O2 arena in London, with tickets available for members of Virgin Red and Virgin Flying Club.

Marriott Bonvoy, of course, has been doing this for years – almost a decade if you include the box when it was run as part of Starwood Preferred Guest.

Whilst Marriott Bonvoy has only released tickets up to the end of September, Virgin Red has just released tickets for November concerts.

We don’t have pictures of the Virgin Red suite because it is in the process of being refurbished. I am there for a press preview of the new look in two weeks so we’ll get some pictures then.

In terms of what you get, the only difference is in food and drink. Marriott Bonvoy offers a free hot buffet and free drinks all night. Virgin Red offers no food and only two free drinks per person, although a cash menu is available.

Is it better to book via Virgin Red or Marriott Bonvoy?

In general, events are generally ‘cheaper’ – using HfP points valuations – if you redeem via Marriott Bonvoy, and that’s before you factor in unlimited free drinks and the buffet.

However, Virgin Red has already made tickets available for November concerts. If you wait for Marriott to release tickets, you run the risk of a) Marriott keeping your preferred event back for in-house use or b) the concert selling out before you realise tickets were released.

Of course, if you don’t have a stash of both Virgin Points and Marriott Bonvoy points, you don’t have a choice anyway.

How to book

If you do not have a Virgin Red account but do have a Virgin Flying Club account, you will need to download the Virgin Red app, sign up and link your Flying Club account. Your existing points balance will then be usable in the app. If you join Virgin Red via this referral link you will get 1,000 bonus points with your first earn transaction.

Top-up via a credit card bonus:

If you want to top up your Virgin Points for a future concert redemption, you now receive 18,000 Virgin Points as a sign-up bonus with the Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Mastercard. Our full review is here and you can apply here.

Top-up by buying points:

If you want to top up your balance by buying Virgin Points, the link is here. There is currently a bonus of up to 60% available depending on how many points you buy.

  • Jamie says:

Can you buy multiple tickets for the same event?

  • Geoggy says:

Don’t waste your points on Peter Kay unless you enjoy old material reheated.

    • Michael says:

Have to say I was pretty disappointed when I saw him in May at the 02 in the Bonvoy suite. 6/10 at most. Nothing like when I saw him back in 2003 and my sides were sore from laughing.

  • LittleNick says:

So 50000 points a lot of them, some even 65000 equates to £500/£650 respectively at our 1p valuation but that doesn’t include any food and drink? Nah, I think Virgin need to up their game

    • Rob says:

I agree, this pricing is looking toppy.

For comparison, the equivalent number of Avios is fairly certain to win you the Qatar Privilege Club auction for the tickets for The NinetyThird, and that comes with a £400 food and drink tab.

  • Rob H not Rob says:

    Rubbish value.

  • Panda Mick says:

Seems a little weird seeing Crowded House at the O2, as I saw them in 2022 at the Round House. They were excellent, for anyone considering.

    • @alastairtravel says:

Crowded House are one of my favourite bands, but struggle to see how they will work in the cavernous O2 – not sure they will come close to filling it either.

      • Rob says:

No problem finding 20k 50-year olds. I was tempted myself but the date doesn’t work. Will probably go to Journey though!

        • Rob H not Rob says:

See you down the front, as a paying guest. Cheap Trick will wipe the floor with them as support.

  • Ian says:

Which is the best option at the O2?

Not only for food & drink, but also view.

    • Rob says:

NinetyThird by a million miles, given it has a fine dining restaurant and a champagne bar which goes into silly money.

Qatar only auctions 1 pair per concert but of course you get the £400 tab.
