American Express has launched a new deal with the Leading Hotels of the World marketing group.

It’s not the most generous ever seen in terms of the percentage of your spend returned, but the fact that you are paid out in Membership Rewards points will make it attractive to some.

Even better, the offer is valid globally. For once, an Amex hotel cashback offer can be used in North America, South America, Africa and Asia (plus one hotel in Australasia!) as well as Europe.

How does it work?

As usual, you need to see if you are targeted for the deal via the ‘Offers’ tab of the Amex website or app. Remember to check for each card that you own. Click ‘Save to Card’ if you see it.

There is no sign (yet?) of a variant of the offer appearing on cards which do not offer Membership Rewards points, such as the British Airways cards.

Here is the small print:

  • You will earn 15,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you spend £600 or more
  • Cumulative spend counts
  • The offer runs to 10th December
  • In theory, you need to pay at check-out for the bonus to trigger, not prepay (unless, of course, you prepay your stay and then spend £600 on food, spa etc in the property)

Remember that the 2.99% American Express FX fee does NOT count towards the £600. If you spend exactly £600 in a UK hotel, it triggers the 15,000 points. If you spend exactly £600 in an overseas hotel, it will NOT trigger the £600 because the £600 shown on your statement is actually £582 plus 2.99% FX fee.

The list of participating hotels is here (PDF).

The UK hotel list is quite thin:

Remember that if you are booking a Leading Hotels of the World property there is no requirement to book via the LHW website to get the bonus as long as you pay at check-out.

Some – not many, admittedly – hotels on the list are part of other chains, allowing you to double-dip with elite benefits and points. I spotted Melia, Capella (Global Hotel Alliance), Kempinski (Global Hotel Alliance) and Anantara (Global Hotel Alliance) properties.

Before you book, you should enquire via our luxury hotel booking partner Emyr Thomas about extra benefits he can get you, such as free breakfast, upgrades or a $100 hotel credit. You can contact Emyr via the form on this page of HfP.

PS. Two other new relevant offers have also appeared on American Express cards:

  • Get £100 cashback on £300 spend with The Pig Hotel Group
  • Get £25 cashback on a £250 spend with Harvey Nichols (would double-up with your American Express Platinum credit if the offer appears on your Platinum card)

I’m staying at one of the hotels on the list (Baglioni Maldives) later this month. I booked the rooms via Expedia but the hotel will charge us directly $480 per person (x2) sea plane transfer fee. I assume they will allow us to settle this at checkout. Is there any reason the seaplane transfer fee will be excluded? I can’t see any.

This is especially welcome, I’m going to a conference in The Landmark in early December and I’m speaking there ( coz I’m quite important like that) 15000 MR on expenses job done!

Might be a stupid Q – do you have to redeem before the purchase or could it apply to a transaction on your statement. Never used these offers before!

  • Eve says:

I have to prepay for my stay on November 30th. Do you know if there is anyway it will still work?

    • Rob says:

Very likely as long as a) the hotel takes the money and not LHW and b) they do actually charge you – a lot of prepaid rates don’t actually get charged because it doubles the work for the hotel given they need to charge you for extras anyway when you are there.
