NEW: Earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy hotel points with Sonder

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Back in August, Marriott announced a 20-year licensing agreement with Sonder.

Sonder operates 200 so-called “apartment-style accommodations in urban markets.” The deal will see Marriott add over 9,000 rooms to its inventory.

Looking at Sonder’s website it has a sizeable presence in London, where it manages 16 buildings. This includes the site that was My Hotel Chelsea.

Marriott adds Sonder brand

The portfolio appears to be skewed towards multi-bedroom apartments. Sonder says they appeal to “key demographics, including younger travelers, these assets leverage a digital-first operating model and cater to longer stays.”

Progress has been made with Marriott Bonvoy integration

Just two months after the announcement, a very basic level of Marriott Bonvoy integration is available.

You CANNOT book Sonder properties, for cash or points, on marriott.com at this time.

However, if you book via the Sonder website, you will see a box on the final booking page which allows you to add your Marriott Bonvoy number.

The good news

  • You will earn 10 Bonvoy points per $1 (pre-tax), plus any elite bonus, at Sonder hotel properties
  • You will earn 5 Bonvoy points per $1 (pre-tax), plus any elite bonus, at Sonder apartment properties
  • You will earn 1 Bonvoy elite night credit per night, whether at a hotel or apartment property
  • You can redeem at Sonder properties – but see the bullet point below

The bad news

  • You won’t be upgraded based on your Bonvoy status (yet)
  • You won’t receive an elite welcome gift (yet)
  • You won’t get late check-out based on your Bonvoy status (yet)
  • You won’t receive points on incidental spend, only your room rate
  • Redemption requires a telephone call to Sonder and there is no indication of how much redemptions will cost!
  • Any complaints over missing points must be made to Sonder
  • You cannot see details of your booking via the Marriott app or website

To be fair, given that the deal was only signed two months ago I think Marriott and Sonder have done well to get this far so quickly.

The situation will obviously be a lot more straightforward once the Sonder hotels are properly integration into Bonvoy and bookable at marriott.com.

You can learn more about the Bonvoy arrangements on this page of the Sonder website.

  • Chris says:

In certain cities, particularly in America, Sonder apartments are remarkable. I’ve had places that were like an entire house, but cheaper than a hotel room, right in the middle of town. On occasion, actually serviced apartments in hotels.

Had I not got Marriott Titanium I’d probably have already stayed in them a lot more, so this is really fantastic news. (Off the top of my head, cities like Dallas – so maybe not coastal cities like New York so much – and New Orleans etc. have had some really remarkable and large properties, with great social areas too if that’s your thing. Excellent!)

    • TGLoyalty says:

Know someone that recently stayed in Dubai JBR and they were very impressed.

You can use the facilities at FIVE JBR aswell.

The downtown property pics look equally as impressive. This could be good for Marriott as Residence Inns aren’t this nice.

      • Will says:

Sonder JBR is outstanding, I stayed there in 2019, shared pool with Rixos and the 4 bed apartment we had was something like 350sqm and finished to a very high standard.

  • Tracey says:

I agree, Sonder apartments offer great value.

Recently organised a family stay in Montreal and booked 7 apartments in one block, all with different configurations to suit the family groups and with different stay lengths. They are very well organised and good locations.

  • Skywalker says:

If you already have existing bookings, the in-app chat function works really well and Sonder CS will add the membership number for you.

  • MarkMD says:

Agree with the above. Sonder have served me really well – I worked in Philadelphia for a time, and the Sonder apartment I had there was fantastic. Large, light, centrally located, nicely furnished. The model seems to be that they take on chunks of new conversions/builds, plus long-term capacity off hotels. The better stuff seems to be in the new build side of things. Definitely worth checking out, even without the Bonvoy benefits.

  • BBbetter says:

Do these properties come with breakfast options?

    • MarkMD says:

Rarely. I hardly ever have a hotel breakfast anyway, preferring to go out (or make a bagel in the kitchen), but I understand why it’s convenient for some. Sonder doesn’t really cover that need.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Nope it’s definitely an apartment is this regard. But their locations usually mean there’s somewhere close by or some sort of delivery service operating. If you don’t want to make your own ofcourse.

      • BBbetter says:

Ah, no wonder they are cheap.
I just noticed they have a cleaning fee, though it’s zero. Perhaps they are just a corporate form of Airbnb rentals? No wonder they are losing money.

  • Max says:

It’s almost worrying that Sonders joins Marriott, their standards being so much better…

  • Skywalker says:

Sonder’s rates are currently very reasonable in places – I wonder if the prices will start to increase once they are fully integrated into Marriott?

  • OMtravels says:

I can’t see them on the Marriott app, do I have to book on their website directly still?
