News in brief:

Virgin Red splits with Greggs!

In a move destined to send shock waves through the loyalty industry, Virgin Red appears to have split with Greggs.

All of the Greggs redemption offers have disappeared from the Virgin Red app.

Whilst we used to joke about the Greggs redemptions, they DID play an important part in the programme.

They were very low value (from 200 points) which made them useful for people who only earned a small number of Virgin Points, perhaps from credit card spend or economy flights.

They also provided a good ‘pence per point’ value, especially in London where Greggs products are priced higher than the rest of the UK.

The cheapest ‘spend’ redemption in the Virgin Red app is now a £5 Costa Coffee or Caffe Nero giftcard for 1,000 Virgin Points.

Interesting – just heard you can get an economy seat with BA in exchange for 300 Greggs sausage rolls (which are then served in economy) and then you can get an upgrade into the bagged hold at Virgin.

    • Jonathan says:

Where do BA fly you to if you give them 300 sausage rolls, do you get to fly in J – CS or even F ?!

    • GP says:

With 8 First sears, that’s over 37 flights of F catering sorted.
You will need some of petrol station sandwiches to upgrade the second service though.

I read somewhere that these weekly, monthly coffee offers with Greggs, cafe Nero, or whatever are partly incentived by the retailer as they expect to get further business due to footfall.

I currently get the weekly Nero coffee with Octopus and I get 2 monthly Greggs coffees with my 2 policies via confused.com. I never spend a penny with either of them and just collect my free goods!

I wonder if the strategy to get you to buy more isn’t working, we’ll see more of these offers slowly vanishing.
