American Express has launched a new deal with the Leading Hotels of the World marketing group.

You will receive £100 cashback when you spend £600 by 14th July.

The offer is valid globally. For once, an Amex hotel cashback offer can be used in North America, South America, Africa and Asia (plus one hotel in Australia!) as well as Europe.

How does it work?

As usual, you need to see if you are targeted for the deal via the ‘Offers’ tab of the Amex website or app. Remember to check for each card that you own. Click ‘Save to Card’ if you see it.

Here is the small print:

  • You get £100 cashback when you spend £600 or more
  • Cumulative spend counts, which can be across different hotels
  • The offer runs to 14th July
  • In theory, you need to pay at check-out for the bonus to trigger, not prepay (unless, of course, you prepay your stay and then spend £600 on food, spa etc in the property)

Remember that the 2.99% American Express FX fee does NOT count towards the £600. If you spend exactly £600 in a UK hotel, it triggers the £100. If you spend exactly £600 in an overseas hotel, it will NOT trigger the £600 because the £600 shown on your statement is actually £582 plus 2.99% FX fee.

The list of participating hotels is here (PDF).

The UK hotel list is quite thin:

Remember that if you are booking a Leading Hotels of the World property there is no requirement to book via the LHW website to get the bonus as long as you pay at check-out.

Some – not many, admittedly – hotels on the list are part of other chains, allowing you to double-dip with elite benefits and points. I spotted Melia, Capella (Global Hotel Alliance), Kempinski (Global Hotel Alliance) and Anantara (Global Hotel Alliance) properties.

Before you book, you should enquire via our luxury hotel booking partner Emyr Thomas about extra benefits he can get you, such as free breakfast, upgrades or a $100 hotel credit. You can contact Emyr via the form on this page of HfP.

PS. An offer for £100 cashback on £400 spend with The Standard, London has also appeared. This hotel is now part of Hyatt but is NOT yet participating in World of Hyatt. There is a chance it is integrated before the offer ends on 18th May.

Shame – doesn’t show for me but I’ve also used past LHW offers

    • Vit says:

Did you remember was it the same spend & rebate last time? Got this and thinking of staycation at Capella Bangkok.

      • Iv says:

Back in oct/nov I used it in Cyprus – £600 spend for 25K points.

      • Jeanval says:

On an (somewhat unrelated) note, I’ve stayed at Capella Bangkok and it was fantastic. Best property in Bangkok. Really recommend.

  • Fiona says:

I live near Gleneagles. I’ll just stick to a coffee! The place has got ridiculously expensive since Diageo sold it.

    • RussellH says:

I worked in Auchterarder many years ago.
They were employing pupils in S4 in the bar back then – I was never quite sure whether that was legal?

      • Andrew. says:

Nowadays you have to be 16 to work behind a bar in Scotland, but sales have to be approved by someone over 18.

    @rob
I spoke to Amex yesterday and they confirmed that this offer is applicable to prepaid hotel bookings as well. Based on their confirmation I booked a prepaid hotel. Does it mean that I now stand to lose this statement credit?

  • Judith says:

I have just checked with American Express and the offer is only available for Platinum and Gold members, not the Premium Plus. Rather a shame as I’m off to Madrid next week and staying in a LHW.

  • Mr. AC says:

I have, in fact, had the same infuriating experience where the CB didn’t trigger, I reached out to Amex chat support, they pointed me to a clause in terms that said the hotel spend must be “billed in GBP” and told me to go take a hike. The hotel was in Europe, charged me in EUR, and was included in the list of participating hotels. I even called the Platinum line about it – no dice.

    • Rob says:

It was only yesterday that I posted:

“Ah, it’s my bi-weekly ‘don’t believe a word the Amex call centre tells you’ comment. Come back at the weekend for the next one 🙂”

Seems I didn’t need to wait until the weekend.

  • Robert says:

Will this work if I book through Amex FHR?

  • Judith says:

I have checked again with American Express about why we didn’t have the offer on our Premium Plus card (I was told yesterday it was only for Platinum and Gold). After seeing the comments from other people saying it was available on the Premium Plus Card, the answer from American Express today is that there were a limit number of LHW offers available and they they were all taken up quickly! A different answer than yesterday – same result!
