This is our review of the La Valette Club lounge in Malta International Airport.

Malta International Airport is not big. In fact, it’s so small that it doesn’t have any jetbridges. It does, however, have a lounge – La Valette Club – that is operated as a third party lounge.

Any airline, including the new national carrier KM Malta, that wants to offer lounge access to its passengers at Malta must use it. It is also accessible with Priority Pass.

I was in Malta to see KM Malta Airlines. I will be reviewing their business class cabin but we are holding it back for a couple of weeks to link with an upcoming promotion.

The lounge is open 24 hours a day.

Inside La Valette Club

The good news is that the lounge is relatively large, with a big outdoor terrace. Whilst it was fairly busy when I arrived, just before the Emirates flight departed, it was never full and quickly emptied out once boarding began.

It’s quite a deep space and away from the windows relatively dark. The interior features an open floor plan with lots of low-backed seating:

In the windows you have a series of sofas grouped in horseshoes:

To the left is a dining area with sit down tables as well as bar tables.

On the right hand side you’ll find a row of pretty new iMacs, although the days of desktops in lounges is a thing of the past, I suspect:

Also in this area is a separate space for High Altitude members, I believe part of La Valette Club’s membership program.

The aforementioned terrace is large with half shaded and half open to the sun. It offered views across the runway and would be a nice place to hang out in warmer weather.

Food and drink in La Valette Club

A buffet offers a selection of hot and cold food options as well as a self-service bar. Drinks include beers, Maltese wines and Italian prosecco. Spirits and other alcoholic drinks are also on offer.

When it comes to food the hot items are largely meat skewers:

There’s also a salad bar and cold cuts:

Muffins, lamingtons and other deserts were also available.

Conclusion

La Valette Club is the only lounge at Malta International Airport, so it’s this or bust. Fortunately, the lounge is decent with comfortable seating and a fantastic terrace overlooking the airport.

Alcohol is self-pour and includes prosecco, which is a step above most third party lounges, although the food leaves a lot to be desired as there’s no real hot food, just once-hot meat skewers.

It’s definitely an improvement on the previous version of the lounge. As mentioned above you still need to clear immigration so allow time for the queue which can be lengthy

Sadly, I’m old enough to remember the BA business class ‘room’, at Luqa, back in the late 1990’s, even before the earlier La Valette lounge. I well remember climbing some stairs, to what looked like an office. The door was locked, so I had to trapse back to check in to get someone with a key. Indeed, the ‘room’ was little more than a converted office, with seating for, at most, 6-8 people. There were a few magazines, and a fridge with some drinks. I can’t remember any food, but maybe a few snacks available.

IIRC they have more variety of food around standard mealtimes. When I was there recently lunch included little lasagnes and a selection of pastizzi, and they had cakes, muffins and a huge fruit platter for dessert. The drink selection is also good, self-pour on all of it, and as much Kinnie as you can drink.

      Hard agree, Nick.
You go to the this lounge to recharge with pastizzi and kinnie. Twistees too if you are desperate. It’s worth stowing a few kinnies for your flight.

The outdoor space is a bit depressing. It’s not the best environment if you want a last blast of mediterranean sun. It is often full of smokers and the airport operations experience (think noise + the smell of Jet A-1 fuel) don’t help. However, it is peak Malta.

I was there last week and was pretty impressed with the lounge food. The selection of salads, nibbles and cold cuts was decent and the hot food was regularly replenished. When I was there, they had meat skewers, cannelloni, potato/cheese bites, soup and pastizzis.

Add in the outdoor terrace and I was kinda disappointed that BA don’t open bag drop earlier and I wasn’t able to have spent longer there.

There’s also a smaller version of the La Valette Club in the baggage reclaim hall which you can access with priority pass when arriving into MLA on any inbound flight.

  • ADS says:

I had a few hours between flights in MLA in March … the terminal was pretty chilled when I arrived, so I didn’t bother paying for lounge access … but it got progressively more rammed as the afternoon wore on … and I regretted not getting lounge access!

btw, KM only offer connecting flights to LCA / IST from London … but my Expedia booking to FCO was a proper connecting reservation (rather than the two singles). weird that KM don’t sell connecting flights to other destinations.
