News in brief:

British Airways lounge changes at Manchester Airport

Whilst we wait for British Airways to move across to Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport, lounge provision in Terminal 3 is expected to take a turn for the worse this week.

Rumours on Flyertalk and forums4airports claim that the Escape lounge in Terminal 3 will close for good on Monday evening.

From Tuesday, British Airways passengers will be sent to a temporary lounge space.

There is no confirmation of where this will be. One source says it will be ‘in the old BMI lounge’ whilst a (more likely) alternative source says that it will simply be a roped off area of seating in the departure area. It would gain a coffee machine and some biscuits, but no ‘proper’ food will be available.

We will see on Tuesday ….

The same sources seem confident that the Terminal 2 space which had been reserved for a Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse will now be developed by Manchester Airports Group. It will become a dedicated airline lounge for British Airways, Qatar Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

Separately, it seems that the 1903 brand will be retired. The Terminal 2 lounge, which Rhys toured here, will apparently be turned into an extension of the Escape lounge. This is not surprising as the two lounges already share an overflow space which can become part of either lounge depending on capacity.

When are BA expected to move to T2?

    • MAN Traveller says:

I believe it’s been put on indefinite hold because T2 has no domestic facilities. When T3 was created it was originially the domestic terminal which is why BMI was also based there. Now eventually they want everything in T2 but there’s a lot of work to make that happen and airlines with domestic routes will be the last to move over, if they ever do

  • HampshireHog says:

I assume you mean the Terminal 2 space reserved for a new lounge?

  • Pat says:

The gate lounge would be an excellent opportunity to showcase the Hill’s Biscuits “shortbread flavour” shorties now available onboard. Not a drop of butter in sight.

  • BlairWaldorfSalad says:

Whilst I have lamented the decline of the 1903 lounges, this is largely a result of them moving away from airline exclusivity contracts and becoming only marginally more expensive than Escape and thus attracting the same guests. My last visit to T2 1903 was with zero expectations and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Definitely a number of steps above an Escape lounge. Sadly the scores of empty glasses but not so many plates per table suggested others were more interested in liquid calories.

Perhaps its because the cost of the lounges can only be justified for people paying to get in by the number of drinks they can go thru?

  • Barrel for Scraping says:

Why can’t you or your team of award winning journalists simply phone up the MAN press office and find out what the actual lounge arrangements are going to be and if they’re not responding maybe take a flight to MAN and speak to the lounge staff?

Why is it more likely to be a roped off section in the departure lounge than using the space that the bmi lounge used to occupy?

A fact is a fact. Can write it in 20 words. End of article.

Rumour, counter rumour, discussion, rebuttal …. can live off that for a week.

We actually have a bigger problem now. THere is very little mid-level stuff going on in this business that we don’t know about. It’s just a function of our ever increasing contacts and the sheer number of conferences we now speak at and events we attend. We sometimes have to write articles pretending that we don’t know something when we actually do, because we are sworn to secrecy on the truth.

Some industry people have also wised up. They deliberately tell us something and then say ‘but it’s a secret so you can’t write about it’. We’re then stuffed. If a reader emails us the next day with the same story as a rumour, we can’t run it because the industry person will think we’ve made up the email and are blurting out what was told in confidence ….

Whilst I appreciate your honesty… really? I think a lesson in not blowing your own trumpet so much may eliminate some of the arrogance in the articles, and the fact Conny’s reviews are superb and loved by all.

Again though, honesty is a lovely quality, so I guess I’d rather hear the truth… whatever that is these days LOL

Are the rumours about Manchester Deansgate leaving Hilton true?

      • Rob says:

You saw our piece the other week. The new tower (with a Hampton in it) will obscure part of the Hilton tower which isn’t ideal for charging a premium for a view. The hotel is reportedly in a bit of state inside. The management contract is apparently up in the next 12-18 months. In these scenarios its probably 50/50 whether it is kicked down to a Doubletree or the owners decide to pump in £20 million and upgrade it.

roped off section? its back on the train from Manchester for me, 3 times an hour, and just 2 hours to London, its no longer worth the hassles of Man Airport..

    • Barrel for Scraping says:

See what the new lounge arrangements are first. If they’re moving to the old bmi space and it’s only for BA it might actually improve the lounge experience as you’re not having to deal with overcrowding that most priority pass lounges experience.

  • davefl says:

T2 not T3 for the never utilised VS lounge space.

  • Martin says:

#yournewt2 is an interesting choice of hashtag. Will there be a pair of amphibians?
