KM Malta Airlines, the new national carrier of Malta with daily services to Heathrow, has launched a status match.

This is a good opportunity for anyone who travels to Malta on a regular basis to make their trip more comfortable.

There are four ways of taking part. Full details are on the status match website.

KM Malta Airlines status match

The obvious one is that you match your existing airline status. Many major airlines are taking part and you can match all the way to Pioneer, the KM Rewards top tier. This gives you lounge access when travelling.

(Air France KLM Flying Blue, ITA Volare and Lufthansa Miles & More members are excluded as these airlines are KM Malta Airlines codeshare partners.)

Silver status in British Airways Club is good enough to match to top-tier Pioneer.

KM Malta is matching easyJet

You can also match easyJet Plus or easyJet Flight Club status to top-tier Pioneer status.

This is a smart move. easyJet is a competitor on the Malta route and KM Malta Airlines is willing to give you lounge access at Heathrow and in Malta (via a match to Pioneer status) to switch your flights to them.

Match your hotel status or travel credit card

Thirdly, you can match elite hotel status to KM Rewards. You cannot get top tier Pioneer status via the hotel route, with two exceptions – you need to have Marriott Ambassador Elite status or IHG’s Royal Ambassador.

Finally, you can match certain premium credit cards to KM Rewards. Again, this does NOT allow you to get top tier Pioneer status, with two exceptions – you need to have The Centurion Card from American Express or a Visa Infinite card.

There are application fees, refundable if your match is not accepted. Top tier Pioneer status is €149. THe lower tiers are €49 and €79 respectively.

Your new status will last until 31st March 2026. This is a fixed date irrespective of when you apply, so at most you get eight months from it.

KM Malta Airlines is not in an alliance so your status is ONLY of any use when flying to/from Malta. If you take occasional trips to Malta this is worth a look, but there is nothing in it for you otherwise.

You can find out more, and apply, on the status match website here.

You can learn more about KM Malta Airlines in our recent flight review here. In Heathrow Terminal 4 it uses the excellent Gulf Air Falcon Lounge which we reviewed here. In Malta, it uses the La Valette Club lounge which we reviewed here.

‘Many major airlines are taking part’

Err, I don’t think the other airlines have anything to do with it!

  • Nick says:

Thanks Rob. Jumped on this already yesterday, and used my earlier status match to Royal Jordanian Royal Club ‘Gold Sparrow’, which you posted, to obtain ‘Pioneer’ status. It should be a benefit, even at €149, as a business & leisure run for me.

  • David says:

Thanks. Have 3 business class flights booked, matched my Virgin Gold (via my old Centurion Card), 14% cashback now

  • Peter says:

This is a good offer as I use them regularly, they are very competitive pricing wise and I like that they have late evening flights out of LHR.

What is unclear, having read their terms and conditions, is whether they will let you take a guest traveling with you into the lounge like most other airline status. It’s only going to be useful to me if I can take my other half into the Gulf air lounge at T4. Knowing KM, I suspect they won’t but if anyone knows to the contrary then please do let me know.

I’ve had some frustration with their loyalty scheme so far in that they don’t allow you to get miles or tier points from bookings which have been made via OTAs and they seem to sell their fares cheaper via OTAs than direct. I emailed them to retro claim the miles and they pointed to something in their Ts and Cs restricting this.
