The Barclays Premier Current Account1 is the only UK current account with the option to collect monthly Avios to spend with British Airways through Barclays Avios Rewards2.

(Frankly, if you earn £75,000 per year, it makes no sense to have a standard current account when a free Premier alternative is available!)

What do you get from Barclays Avios Rewards?

Barclays Avios Rewards is a reward scheme exclusive to Barclays Premier Banking customers. For £12 a month, you get:

  • 1,500 Avios collected every month
  • A ‘cabin upgrade voucher’ as an Anniversary Reward after 12 months (more details below)
  • A joining bonus3 of 25,000 Avios if you’re opening your first account with Barclays and complete a full switch using the Current Account Switch Service within three months, which means eligible customers could collect up to 43,000 Avios in the first year

This is very attractive – you will receive a British Airways upgrade voucher simply for keeping your free Barclays Premier Current Account open and paying for 12 months of Barclays Avios Rewards. There is no spend target to meet – you just need to remain a Barclays Premier Banking customer.

There are of course other benefits to being a Barclays Premier Banking customer, which you can see here, but for this article, our focus is on Avios and the upgrade voucher.

How does the upgrade voucher work?

The upgrade voucher will be triggered after you have been a Barclays Avios Rewards member for 12 months, and every 12 months thereafter, and is valid for travel taken within two years of the date of issue.

You can use the voucher to upgrade by one cabin class; either on return flights for one person, or a one-way for two people.

Upgrades can only be processed if there is Avios reward availability in the higher cabin. Additional taxes and charges may be due. Bookings cannot be upgraded to First class.

The voucher benefits are transferrable to another person but the flight must be booked from the ba.com account of the Barclays Premier member, who is responsible for paying the necessary taxes, charges and Avios.

And if you don’t want to use the voucher, you can choose 7,000 bonus Avios instead of the upgrade voucher. You need to make your choice in the Barclays app4 before your voucher is triggered annually.

Get 25,000 Avios as a sign-up bonus

New Barclays Premier Banking customers can collect up to 25,000 Avios as a joining bonus. To receive this, you’ll need to move your existing current account to a Barclays Premier Current Account via the Current Account Switch Service, within three months of joining Barclays Avios Rewards.

The sign-up page is here.

If you’ve had a Barclays Current Account for longer than four months but haven’t joined Barclays Avios Rewards, you can still collect a one-off joining bonus of 2,500 Avios when you join Barclays Avios Rewards.

Tried to sign up for this the other day and it told me I had to book an appointment in a branch to confirm my identity, this is despite the fact that I’ve lived in the same place for 12 years and had a Barclaycard product for even longer than that.

    • TD says:

I had the same issue and it took two or so weeks after the appointment before the account was finally opened, after the technical issues that we’re stopping the account being opened had been escalated. I was told the issue was the fact I was already a Barclaycard customer (with the BA Avios card). Seems having an existing “profile” with them can mess up their bank account opening process, meaning the app can’t complete the steps; and it seems this bug hasn’t been fixed. I must admit it didn’t give me a good first impression.

      • Lumma says:

What I thought was also bad was that you have to apply on the app, so I download it (the Barclays one and not the Barclaycard app I already have) and it asks if you’re already a customer, click yes and sign in with my card details which results in the app being an exact copy of the Barclaycard app with no option to add any other products.

A few years back I actually attended a focus group about their app at their offices in Canary Wharf, so perhaps it’s my fault

      • Ducktails says:

The bug was there right from the launch of the Avios credit card. At the time, I’d been a Barclays customer for 22 years, but the system couldn’t reconcile my existing profile with the new credit card application—even though all the information matched. Cancelling the card was a whole other nightmare. I went into a branch (back when they still existed) and ended up closing all my accounts. Honestly, they didn’t seem to care. These offers can be great—if everything works smoothly and you never need to contact customer service.

    • Paul says:

When I opened an account a couple of years ago, and also had been a Barclaycard holder for several years, it took 3 booked appointments at my now not so local branch, with much telephoning around by the assistant, before successfully opening my Premier account. Completely different experience to opening a Chase account for the first time with a few mouse clicks!

    • yonasl says:

Same here. And I worked at Barclays!

    • BBbetter says:

One of the workarounds mentioned was to say no to the question ’are you an existing customer?’

  • MickyB says:

Is the £75k income figure definitely correct still? Other sources state that an income of £100k is required now.

  • Matt says:

Rob – do you have to switch direct debits with the account, or not?

  • Chas says:

I had a very odd experience with trying to use the Barclays upgrade voucher yesterday for a trip next year to LJU (Ljubljana) in J. With the voucher it priced as 16,500 Avios and £385. Without, that option didn’t exist but none of the cash elements were anywhere near that high. I ended up paying 27,000 Avios and £74, keeping my voucher for another day.

    • MikeHi says:

Stories like this make me increasingly concerned about trying to utilise my 2 ‘upgrade’ vouchers next year. I’m less and less convinced by their utility.

Incidentally, I’m off to Ljubljana at the end of the week, never been to Slovenia but heard lots of good things!

    • Paul says:

I had a similar experience a couple of weeks ago. Initially, seeking return flights to Dublin next week for my wife and myself resulted in a quote of nearly £200 each plus Avios. Tried again an hour or so later and the hoped for fares of £12.50 each way were offered. No change to out and return dates. I can’t remember if the Avios needed differed much. I accept that it may be down to my unwittingly approaching the task subtly differently, but the process should be immune to such variations.

    • Nico says:

Used mine no issue last month, worth calling if something is off

      • Chas says:

I might have considered that, but I had fixed dates that I was needing, and there was only one J seat for the return, so decided to secure it at a price I was happy with. Plus I’m abroad and didn’t fancy hanging on the end of the phone on the last day of my holiday.

  • mzb says:

The utility of that voucher would significantly increase if we could address two restrictions:
    1. Ability to book travel from outside the UK (for the case where one needs to book the return one way ticket for two pax)
    2. Remove restriction of only having the choice of the most avios + least cash option. It’s a really poor choice for most.

    • Thegasman says:

Just on point 2, it’s a terrible choice for short haul but the best option for long haul with RFS.

    • BBbetter says:

Point 1 is risky from BA point of view as the voucher can be used for anyone. Next minute, it’ll be sold on eBay. BA can make it applicable for only those in household account and then remove the restriction on starting outside UK.

      • Greg says:

Great point. My wife and I travel back and forth to Istanbul throughout the year at random dates but usually use the BUV to book a way out return date, paying £35 to change it when we know our return date.

Barclays travel plus insurance also requires the return booking to be made before you leave the U.K. so it’s usually a necessity.

  • Gordon says:

Just remember the £75k eligibility figure is gross! No point in having £100k invested in Barclays, there’s better options out there.

I was already banking with Barclays, when the premier account was introduced a few years back.

so had an appointment at my local branch (not in London) and it was a seamless process, when this was in it’s infancy, there were a lot of comments on hfp regarding waiting weeks for an appointment in some London branches.

Also when the premier account was introduced, with the option to receive 100k Avios, if you open the account and apply for the Barclaycard plus, was a no brainer.

Sadly, having let a few BUV’s expire I’ll take the 7k Avios instead, in future, shame you can’t pass them over to someone, as I still have two.

    • JDB says:

You can use the BUVs for someone else, but you have to book their seats from your BAC account. We also don’t find the BUV of any use and take the 7k Avios, but the sums still add up.

  • JDB says:

One additional benefit of the Premier account is Dual Rewards if you also hold the Barclaycard Avios Plus, which gives you £5 off the card’s £20 monthly fee (although in fact they deduct it from the £12 monthly Avios Rewards) plus four free DragonPasses.

    • Gordon says:

I’d also add, that you can purchase Dragon passes for £20.50p, with the free Barclaycard.
      I’ve seen people questioning this!

    • BBbetter says:

Can these 4 passes be used by someone other than the card holder even if not traveling together?

      • JDB says:

No, the membership holder must be present to allow guests.

      • Mr. AC says:

Not in my experience, sadly. The app shows the 4 passes balance, and directly underneath it says “for use of cardholder with guests”.

    • Greg says:

Having Premier and BAP card also gives you more upgrade vouchers based on spend and anniversary dates.

They also remind you once you can select between BUV and Avios which I once jumped at – only to realise I had so many that it was a waste given the 2 year expiry date.

  • Inman says:

I had a Barclays standard current account some years ago and had a horrific experience with their customer service. Both in-branch and over the phone. So much that while I was seated in the Barclays branch, I called First Direct and initiated opening an account with them instead. I still use the FD account.
Are there any other premier banking products except Barclays (not necessarily Avios-earning) for someone within 75-99k income range? Terrified of going back to Barclays.
