NEW: Big bonuses for adding supplementary cards to Amex Gold and Platinum

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

American Express has launched a special offer for anyone who holds the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card or The Platinum Card and has never added a free supplementary cardholder.

Until 31st October, the bonus for adding your first Gold supplementary card is tripled to 9,000 Membership Rewards points.

The bonus for adding your first Platinum supplementary card is increased from 5,000 to 12,000 Membership Rewards points.

There is no spend target to hit on the supplementary cards.

Get 6,000 points when you add a free supplementary card to your Amex Gold

Your first supplementary card is free so this is a very easy pile of points.

This offer is only available on the FIRST supplementary card added to your American Express account. If you already have a supplementary card in issue, you will not get the bonus if you add another one to the same account.

You MUST use this page of the American Express website to add your supplementary card.

Gold and Platinum currently have big sign-up bonuses too

American Express is currently running a great sign-up bonus of:

  • 40,000 Membership Rewards points when you get Preferred Rewards Gold and
  • 80,000 Membership Rewards points when you get The Platinum Card

These would convert to 40,000 or 80,000 Avios amongst things.

You can read more about the Gold offer in this HfP article. The application form is here.

You can read more about the Platinum offer in this HfP article. The application form is here.

These offers will stack. Do NOT apply for a supplementary card as part of your Preferred Rewards Gold or The Platinum Card application. Wait until your card arrives and then add a supplementary card via this link. If you do it by 31st October you’ll get the additional 9,000 (Gold) or 12,000 (Platinum) Membership Rewards points on top of the 40,000 or 80,000 points.

Other cards also have special supplementary card bonuses

American Express is also running special bonuses for adding your first supplementary card to:

  • Marriott Bonvoy American Express Credit Card – 6,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (usually 3,000 Marriott Bonvoy points)
  • Nectar Credit Card – 6,000 Nectar points (usually 3,000 Nectar points)
  • Platinum Cashback Credit Card – £30 cashback (usually £5 cashback)
  • Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card – £25 cashback (usually £5 cashback)

The usual bonuses – as long as you apply via the link above – are available on other key American Express cards when you add your FIRST supplementary card:

  • The American Express Rewards Credit Card – 2,000 Membership Rewards points
  • British Airways American Express Credit Card – 1,000 Avios
  • British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card – 3,000 Avios
  • The Harrods American Express Card – 1,000 Harrods Rewards points

How long does the offer run?

The special offer on supplementary cards for American Express Preferred Rewards Gold and The Platinum Card runs to 31st October.

If you have never issued a supplementary card in the past on your current Amex Gold or Amex Platinum card, now is as good a time as you will get.

You must use this special page of the American Express website to add your supplementary card. If you use any other page of the Amex website, your bonus will not track.

Thanks to Joe for flagging.

On the Business Gold you get 3000 points for each of the first 3 supp’s, so 9000 in total.
I have done this before and just now again on a new Gold Business card.
Seems like its a permanent feature.

  • Johnny says:

Is this offer only once per account – if I cancel the sup card would I be eligible next time round?

    • Rob says:

Not clear, but potentially. It depends how the Amex IT system looks to decide if this is the ‘first’ supplementary card.

  • Sophia says:

I got the email from Amex. It didn’t mention anything about “never” having had one. I had my partner as a supp cardholder. Then removed him when he got his own. That was a couple of months ago. Can I add a different person and still receive the points?

  • NorthernLass' Yorkshire Terrier says:

Just applied the supp on my plat and gold and got a lower amount of 7k on plat and 6k on gold. This is still more than the 3k on gold you usually get but not the advertised 9k (on gold). What’s going on?

  • George Ritchie says:

Thanks for all your advice on the Amex Gold card. This year is my first year of taking Amex Gold. I have managed to earn over 51,000 Avios for just £3,000 spend. 38,000 by taking the targeted offer. Something over 4,000 for spend on airlines which scored double points, and now 9,000 points for adding my wife as second cardholder. Just need to remember to cancel before the free 12 months is up!

    • Wally1976 says:

Set a reminder but if you forget you’ll get a pro-rata refund on the annual fee anyway when you do remember (assuming Amex don’t stop doing this).

  • tony says:

Question: I have just applied for the Platinum Amex. If I add my wife as a supplementary card holder, can I also refer her to apply for her own Platinum card (so she can also take advantage of the current welcome bonus). If so, can she then add me as a supplementary card holder on her account?

  • Akshay says:

How long does it normally take for the referral MR to be added please? Thanks in advance.

  • Nicolidus says:

I’ve just applied for a Gold card for the bonus, but requested a supplementary card on the original application. Will I get this extra bonus?
