If you have the free Virgin Atlantic Reward Mastercard there is good news. You can apply for the Reward+ card too, and receive the 36,000 Virgin Points bonus.

(And vice versa – if you have the Reward+ card, you can get an easy 6,000 Virgin Points by adding the free card.)

Virgin Atlantic credit cards 36,000 points bonus

There is no ‘special’ application route. If you hold either of the Virgin Atlantic Reward credit cards, you can simply go to the application page here and apply for the one you don’t have.

(The only way to apply is by doing the ‘eligibility check’. You can’t go directly to the application form.)

If you pass the eligibility check, you can complete your application. If you are accepted, you will receive the card and the 6,000 or 36,000 Virgin Points bonus.

Note that you must not have applied for any other Virgin Money card in the last three months.

Before you apply, you need to know a few things

There are a couple of things to note here.

  • You are NOT swapping one card for the other. Unless you later choose to cancel your existing card, you will have two Virgin Atlantic credit cards.
  • You are NOT transferring your credit limit from the old card to the new card. You will get a fresh credit limit on the new card. You will be rejected for the second card if Virgin Money does not wish to increase the overall amount of credit you hold with it. There is no process for shifting your credit limit from one card to the other during the application process.
  • You are NOT transferring your ‘spend to date’ towards the annual companion and upgrade voucher to your new card. You will be starting from scratch towards the £10,000 or £20,000 of spend needed to trigger the voucher. You can, of course, keep spending on your existing card as well to earn the voucher on that card.
  • You can earn TWO companion and upgrade vouchers each year if you have both cards, as long as you hit the spend target on each.

If the first three points above are an issue for you, you can either cancel your existing card before applying (but you risk being stuck with no Virgin Atlantic cards if you are rejected) or potentially reduce the credit limit on your existing credit card first in order to improve your chance of acceptance.

It is also possible that Virgin Money gives you a very small limit on your new card if it is concerned about extending more credit. If this happens, you could request that your credit is reallocated between your free and paid card, or cancel your first card completely and then request an increase on your new one.

I already hv rewards+. Applied for free card got rejected despite full credit score. Weird! Never been rejected for credit card before. Any others with similar experience?

  • Swiss Jim says:

I assume Virgin would be reasonable in reallocating credit limit – I’d be interested if anyone has experience either way. But, if not, remember you have 14 days to cancel the credit agreement, so it’s a one way bet if needed on the paid card. Though no idea if doing so impacts your credit score.

They don’t change the credit limit on the current card, but you might find the credit limit on the new card is lower on the new card. I rang up to request transfer of credit limit from existing to new card but was told not possible but that I could request an increase on the new card after 6 months of having the new card.

Been trying to apply for the free card too for months, sometimes pre approved with an offer of guaranteed credit limit £25k and sometimes refused. But there is no way to proceed with the application, you just go round in circles. Tried different browsers etc, given up!

  • Mco says:

Do they do hard credit search? I have the Plus card and want to free card.
