News in brief:

Our site speed issues should be fixed

Apologies to anyone who has been struggling with HfP running slowly in recent days. We have tracked down the problem to a rogue AI system in the US which was continually bombarding us with data requests. The situation should now be back to normal.

Royal Jordanian will let you buy back elite status

Many HfP readers matched their airline or hotel status to Royal Jordanian over the last year or so.

Why? Because Royal Jordanian is a oneworld alliance member, alongside British Airways, and so your Royal Jordanian status is valid on British Airways.

The current status match offer is here. You can only match hotel elite status to BA Bronze equivalent (Silver Jay status) whilst airline status can be matched up to BA Silver equivalent (Gold Sparrow).

If you did this match a year ago and did not requalify, Royal Jordanian is letting people buy back their status. You will have received a personalised email:

  • you can buy back Silver Jay status (= BA Bronze) for $75 for 12 months
  • you can buy back Gold Sparrow status (=BA Silver) for $350 for 12 months

I consider these deals to be great value and well worth considering. Your Silver Jay status will give you free seat selection on BA flights from seven days before departure – well worth $75.

Pay $350 to extend Gold Sparrow and you have British Airways lounge access, priority check-in, free seat selection at the time of booking etc locked in for another year.

What’s interesting is that Royal Jordanian clearly thinks it can make money selling Gold Sparrow for $350, even though I assume it is being billed whenever you access a oneworld lounge with your status.

Royal Jordanian seems to offer buy backs on a regular basis, so if you do a match to Gold Sparrow status now (see our article) there is a decent chance you will be able to extend it for a second year later on.

Good value Champions League hospitality tickets

This has nothing to do with miles and points, but Travelzoo has – alongside its hotel deals – a niche section offering VIP football packages. See here.

A surprisingly good value selection of UEFA Champions League and Carabao Cup games were added yesterday.

The packages below include food and drink or lounge access of some sort – details vary by ground and ticket type. The list was correct as of 8pm last night but games do sell out quickly.

I had a soft landing from Gold Sparrow to Silver Jay. Can I still use the business class check in at the BA flight counters?

  • tomtom135 says:

So would you say there’s a chance RJ will still be offering a status match next year when most of us lose our BA status? This is very tempting already though.

    • Rob says:

They have been offering buy-backs for over a year already. No guarantees of course.

      • Matt says:

Just looked at the original status match (not buy back) and the price has shot up. $149 for Silver Jay (BA Bronze / Ruby equivalent). I was kind of on the fence at $49 so a definite pass.

  • JohnTh says:

Tempting offer! On a redemption flight is is worth bothering to change the FF number back to BA before boarding? Especially as only way to swap over seems to be via online chat session?

    • FlyingTayto says:

What would your reasoning be to swap back on a redemption flight?

No tier points or Avios to be gained, so it would remain best to keep it as RJ, no?

      • Lumma says:

Arguably it’s better to be seen as a Oneworld Sapphire than nothing at all if they’re needing to downgrade or deny boarding too

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

Except when BA’s slightly wonky IT does dish out TPs etc. Not a high chance of this, but a higher-than-zero one…

    • brucebruce says:

I got an upgrade on a BA flight redemption flight on the basis of my RJ Gold Sparrow so keep the RJ number in there.

  • YH says:

As far as I understand it, within oneworld, the operating airline pays for lounge access regardless of which scheme you hold status with. For Star Alliance however, it’s the frequent flyer program that pays for lounge access regardless of airline flown.

    • Dubious says:

I understand it to be the other way around – on StarAlliance it is the operating carrier that pays. The rationale is that the operating carrier won the passenger (from competitors) due to their StarAlliance status.

  • Lumma says:

On swapping FF numbers, if you’re flying iberia, you can add the RJ number online in manage my booking.

Before dropping to Silver last month I added my number this way and could just the chargeable front row seats in Premium Economy right away

  • Scallder says:

Silver Jay (Bronze equivalent) also gives priority check in like Gold Sparrow.

Was pleasantly surprised to get a soft landing having bought Gold Sparrow last year so presumably for $350 you’re getting Gold Sparrow for 11-12 months and then Silver Jay for 12 months after that

  • Susan says:

No offer for me, pity as wood have taken it.

  • Dcm says:

Received the email yesterday and I thought this wasn’t a great offer as twice the initial cost then thought no way I’ll earn BAsilver so gave in and spent the £259 but then realised I had a soft landing to Silver Jay. So hopefully it pays off this year and I get silver Jay in 2026. for £149 last year we had seat selection and lounge access on economy flights and seat selection on business that was well worth the price. It may have helped using BA first check in when arriving at T5 with very little time for a flight to NYC as someone had forgotten to put the luggage in the car 🙁
