Hi, I posted in yesterdays daily chat by mistake. I need to fly to Vancouver next month for a week and take my mother for 3 weeks. Have around 300k avios and close to a million Amex points. Never use points if I’m honest as never really know if I’m getting good value. I’ve only really started looking into all this in last year. Just wondering if anyone has any bright ideas on best options for return flights, have silver at BA. I’m not fussed on airline, but would like to go business class.

Also any recommendations for downtown Vancouver hotels?

Sorry for the long post just looking to see what’s best from the seasoned travellers on here.

    Thank you!

I suspect it might be a struggle to get rewards availability to Vancouver (with BA) at this short notice. Especially in business.
You will increase your chances though if you include Seattle in your options (we’ve just done this and it’s a very easy 2.5 hr drive between them).
And if you do consider Seattle, that then opens up Virgin – you could convert some of your Amex points into Virgin.
Not sure about the situation for any US carriers or Air Canada, but hopefully someone else will be able to advise.
Hotel wise, with all those Amex points you’ve got a number of options with the chains (esp. Marriott). We stayed at the Residence Inn, perfectly adequate, decent breakfast and great downtown location. We paid with points, with a 5-4-4 deal.

BA can fly the two of you in Business on a few dates next month, eg 22nd.

BA and other airlines release far fewer business seats for redemption transatlantic E->W. You may need to pay on the return. However, things can change last minute, and non-availability now doesn’t mean non-availability with a few days to go.

Thanks for this, I’ve found availability one way on 13 September. Do you know if I want to book some cash return flights would it be a separate booking required? Probably just fly back premium economy as business is ridiculously expensive.

Have you already checked if Premium Economy, or Economy, award seats are available for your return flights? If so, and you have enough Avios, you could do mixed-class return award bookings. In this case, it would have to be two separate return bookings if you and your mother fly back on different dates. You could ask BA to link them together so they would know you are travelling together in case of any disruption to your outbound flight.

No, it isn’t possible to combine award and cash flights in a single booking.

You might find some of the “Avios University” articles on HeadforPoints useful reading if you haven’t used points before, and there are lots of of helpful people here if you have any other questions.

… if you’re reading the University pieces, take a look at upgrade using Avios. You could book PE for cash in both directions, ie a normal return, upgrade the outbound leg immediately, and the return if it becomes available. Fewer bookings, fewer Avios.
