Not sure how much it is in a cab but when we haven’t been picking up a hire car, we’ve done it by train. Airtrain to Jamaica and then LIRR or subway into NYC.
This is what I do now every time. It is so quick, cheap and painless. Had farrrrr too many stressful (and sometimes grotty) cab transfers to bother with those again. Drivers who engage in road rage, either giving it full throttle / stand on the brakes, wannabe Nascar drivers, non-stop talkers or just getting stuck in traffic – call me miserable but I just want to listen to Audible and travel at a predictable rate at a known level of comfort. The price is a cherry on top.
My advice to 1st timers going to NYC is that taxi (or town car/limo if you can stretch to it) just for the thrill of crossing the bridge into Manhatten for the 1st time and seeing the skyline.
After that… subway or LIRR every time if you’ve not got masses of luggage or large family/babies
