When I was diagnosed with a pretty serious health issue a few years ago that meant I needed surgery and travel became much more complex as a result, I had a similar dilemma regarding an upcoming transatlantic flight. I phoned BA and told them, they were very kind and offered me a full refund. No need to involve any form of insurance, and I was very grateful. It wasn’t a holiday booking so the policies might be different, but from experience I’d definitely say it’s worth a go dealing with them directly first.
