Unless you want to add your BAEC number because you have status and want to choose a seat, I would not bother with the hassle. Check they have your number at the airport checkin/bag drop, and get a paper boarding pass as proof of travel in case you need to claim after the flight. That retrospective claim for BA flights is all online, but you can always go old school and send them a copy of the boarding pass (are faxes still a thing?)
Edit: Just missed your last post – file a re-credit claim with BA online. But if it was not eligible for some reason then I guess you really are SOOL.
