Status and Avios are beneficial for short haul. A flight to Madrid on a busy weekend can be 300-400pp which is ridiculous. However with points and status you can pay £100 and still have lounge access and select the emergency exit seats.

For that you need to pay (your or work) for a few long haul business tickets.

If you fly to Dubai in business and use the double TP offer you may (with a few more flights) earn enough for silver.
