As someone like me who travels maybe 4 times a year and sometimes doesn’t even fly OW, there seems no reason to chase Gold?!
Unless you expect to suddenly be travelling very frequently in economy (eg new job), almost certainly no.
Paying for needless upgrades or indirect routing to maintain status if it’s marginal can make a lot of sense. I’m well short of what i need to retain even silver this year, but I have a couple of work trips coming up, and I’ll do what I can to squeeze every TP possible out of them. Might make the difference.
