Why not go the whole hog and do Bologna instead?
Google Bologna restricting the search to this site there is at least 1 good thread.
Como has much less going for it anyway than Bologna – the best that can be said about Como is the ability to reach other places. In November it’s just sad. Unless you have some reason to want to visit Southern Switzerland I’d absolutely prefer Bologna as a base as very many nicer places to reach. And given grey and wet weather Bologna is still pleasant in town and a lot nicer than Como. You could even reach Florence if you had a mind to, eg via train and Venice isn’t that far. If you must have a lake there is Iseo/Garda but really, not at that time of year.
So, so many interesting towns easy from Bologna too many to mention, good food..
Como is nothing to compare especially in winter
