The basic principle is to assume that tickets cannot be altered. Airline reservation systems usually accept just first name and surname so that is usually how I try to book which means that these sort of problems don’t usually happen to me.
What cabin did you book? If it’s an economy class ticket then I normally assume they are non-changeable and non-refundable.
However I believe AA can make changes like this but it does require a new PNR to be issued, something to do with being unable to amend GDS (the reservation system). I add a caveat in that I think this is usually only possible on tickets bought directly from AA and you mention a travel agent. Also are you sure the 750 is GBP and not USD? I think I would try calling again.
Another possibility is to see if you can change the name via the American Airlines Manage My Booking section.
If none of that works then I think the best thing to do put this down to one of life’s harsh lessons and to rebook.
