It works for me all the time. Of course, the fine print does trip me up from time to time.
Some of the Avios will be posted very late. This normally involves a contract, such as car insurance, broadband, or phone contracts.
For example, my mum needed new broadband back in September. I signed up for one for her (Under her name, her bank account etc.) but via my own BA Shopping/BAEC account. The 3000 Avios only just got posted last week.

My main ones are from Trainline and Sainsbury. Yes, on top of my BAPP and nectar points, I get an extra 110 Avios (the amount varies from time to time; sometimes it is based on how much you spend, and sometimes it is a fixed amount) just by doing the Sainsbury shopping via BA Shopping.

Please keep in mind that, very likely, if you use it on your mobile, try to avoid it. If the BA Shopping app leads you to an app (e.g., going to the Trainline app rather than the Trainline website), it will not track your transaction.
So, use it on a computer instead.
