There is no need to set up a QR account simply to book revenue flights, and you can add your BA FF number in that process. Linking accounts is needed however to access your pool of avios for reward bookings.
I have seen reports, specifically relating to QR, that if you do book when logged in, it can be problem trying to get it changed later to another FF program.
