That’s how it works – if BA adds your inbound leg, you end up with one booking, if you book it online and claim 50% avios back, you are left with 2 separate PNRs.
Great result, anyway! I’m wondering if you could actually add DUB-MAD to the outbound without incurring a lot of extra cost as it’s not a U.K. departure (this is the killer for the surcharges). You then wouldn’t have to worry about missed connections and re-checking your bags.
