Advantages –

Easier to change/cancel if your plans change and you want to fly either leg on a different date. I’ve taken advantage of this a few times, including while I have been on the holiday.

Can save you some cash on the surcharges on certain routes.

Disadvantages –

If you cancel the whole trip you pay 2 x fee.

Your return isn’t protected if the airline cancels your outbound.
