I never used to have an IDP as I’d managed to drive in the US many times but I just wasn’t aware of it. I get one now as I don’t think it’s correct to say you don’t need one. It’s likely more needed in the event of an accident as I’ve never been asked for one by the car rental company – same goes for the addendum to your UK license which you can download before you go.
