If you’re looking at Hilton’s the Midtown Manhattan was excellent in October. Big and impersonal but great location for subway and walking to sites, and found the shop/deli in the reception useful for snacks, and a great way of spending the resort fee.
Walking wise (didn’t quite get to your 40k a day but did exceed 30k a day for five days, ouch!), I’d recommend south from Brooklyn Bridge, through the park and Squibb Park and along Brooklyn Heights for some great views, and plenty of places to sit. Roosevelt Island another nice place to walk around on the river, and can combine with the NYC Ferry for a trip down the East River to Wall Street and/or Brooklyn. Enjoy!
