Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club 1000 Avios on £500 BA spend

  • 0 post

I recently used a 241 to make a LHR-JNB CPT-LHR booking and the fees were listed on my BA Amex as 2 separate transactions of £736. Great, thought I, possible 2 x 1000 avios on their way until I remembered it was for online transactions only.

I know it’s only £20 worth but when you’re trying to build up your pot of Avios after using 125,000 every little counts. Anyway, this is a booking you cannot make any other way than phone and the CSA, of his own volition, did not charge the £15 each pax telephone fee because of this.

Does the panel think it worth asking BA (or would it be Amex?) for the Avios?

I suspect the pain of trying to get the 1k Avios added by AmEx (who would be the people to ask) will far outweigh the benefit, sadly…

I’ve used the offer twice now and the bonus 1k appeared as soon as the payment cleared so it looks like you will need to chase them if you really want them!

The T&Cs say online bookings only. Which is why I paid with my Gold Card instead of my free BA card when I phoned to book an open jaw redemption last week.

Also, when I asked the CSA if she would waive the telephone booking fee, she said the booking fee doesn’t apply to open jaws redemptions. (This is in line with long standing practice not to charge when a booking is not possible on line)

Interesting, I had 2 CSAs for the transaction and the first one was going to charge it. Just learnt something.

Yes, that’s because you can’t book an open jaw online and the charge is meant to dissuade people from calling when they don’t need to.

..but you might need to argue it to stop them charging in some cases. 🙂
