A friend will have earned a 2-4-1 in November she wants to use for travel in 2026 but is relocating countries next month and plans to apply for Amex in the new country.
Should she retain her UK cards until the 2-4-1 posts (although she can’t book her desired flight as they won’t appear for another year) or can she have a card account in two countries concurrently?
What would you do?
Bumping this in case anyone has a wise idea
Think the title and even forum are misleading as you might not get the right people looking at it as it’s not about a 2-4-1 it’s about global transfer and Amex issued in two countries.
You can technically hold an Amex concurrently in two countries, global transfer doesn’t automatically close the original cards BUT Amex UK will want the card holder to close them as soon as you’re not a U.K. resident, but in reality I doubt a few months while things settle down and decisions about if it’s 100% a long term move are made will matter.
I can’t offer any advice except to say that I have Amex cards in two countries. Amex does not seem to prohibit this as they should be more than aware of the situation (e.g., I have transferred MR points between countries; there’s a question in the UK Amex applications about holding cards in other countries and I’ve entered my US Amex card number there in the past). One thing to consider is whether you can use a non-UK Amex to pay the fees for a 241 booking; I haven’t been brave enough to try this.
thanks both, this is useful. hope she doesn’t lose it as she’s of course spent enough to qualify!
Like RK228, I have had Amex cards in two countries for best part of 10 years and, again like RK228, have transferred MR points between countries and included details of my overseas card in UK card applications, without issue. I certainly wouldn’t lose any sleep about it in her circumstances.
