I need to cancel a flight to Chennai on 2nd March, booked with a 2 4 1 voucher and Avios. I have not paid for seats. I might like to rebook this for November or Jan 2023. I will also be booking some short haul to TLS end March and in the summer. The booking was made on 30th June with a voucher earned on 25/10/19 expiring 25/4/22. Should I get an FTV If I do can I use it for short haul. Would I then get credit for some of the £1200 taxes and charges paid for the original flight. Bernard
Not 100% sure what you’re trying to do here. If you want to change your Chennai booking (as opposed to BA cancelling), the BWC guarantee might kick in (I’m a bit hazy on the dates this applies to, though), but if you did this BA would probably push back and say they can only rebook it within 12 months of the original ticketing date. Also, of course, you wouldn’t be able to get a FTV if you did this.
If you get a FTV, your 241 will be extended until Sep23, so you could then use it for any route where there was avios availability. I think you would either get another FTV back, or cash/avios depending on how much “change” there was, were you to use it for a short haul booking instead.
Yes, the FTV is just credit – you can use it to wherever you want, and if the new totals are less than the value, the balance will be refunded – has to be the same travellers though when you come to re-book.
We turned a long haul 241 into a European trip and got over £1k in taxes back, plus the balance of the avios.
Thank you for your reply. I suppose I am trying to minimise any loss. Having paid £1200 taxes and charges, I wondered what happens if I get an FTV and use it for a much cheaper short haul flight in March. Would I get some change from the £1200 paid and return of some Avios. This might be more feasible than rebooking Chennai sometime in the future, when the situation is more uncertain. I just needed to know before I cancel. I assume I could also pay £35 each and get the whole lot back. Don’t really want to do this. I favour the FTV and short hall booking if I can get some change. @Chavonoz pay £35 pp to get all Avios, your April 22 expiring voucher and remainder cash back.
Or do as @tiriavpo lays out. Cancel for a FTV. Rebook same passengers for any flight with Avios availability til Sept 23 (benefitting from your 241), and get your balance of Cash and Avios refunded. Works with a short haul booking just fine.
Thank you for your help everyone. Your reassurance is appreciated. Looks like FTV is the way to go. I will close this discussion. Have a great year.
Can anyone advise how long it typically takes between applying for an FTV for a 241 booking and receiving it? The BA website says up to seven days, but is this shorter in practice?
Just did this tonight. Applied for anFTV at 16.45 and voucher arrived 17.05- amazing!
Also, I rang BA at 8.05 this morning ON 0344930787 to ask about cancellation options of my Chennai flights. If you opt for cancellation and pay service charge you pay £35 per person. This is not a good option because you only get your taxes back and no charges. Also, you will lose your seat money. All round bad deal.
With an FTV you get a voucher for the full amount of Avios, taxes and charges, seat money and additionally you extend your 2 4 1 voucher until Sept 23. If you use the voucher for a cheaper trip you get a further FTV for the balance of Avios and cash. You can keep booking flights until the money and Avios have gone. If you don’t have enough left for your final trip you can top up the totals with more cash or Avios to cover the trip. The FTV then expires. You can use the balance FTV to pay for taxes, charges, seats and Avios with a new 2 4 1 voucher once you have used the original travel voucher. Not sure if you can combine two 2 4 1 vouchers with FTV.
Hope this helps.
