First timer trying to get to Caribbean (probably BGI) in summer 25. Was looking at BA Club using Barclays Upgrade voucher out and then Virgin back in Upper using VS 2-4-1 voucher. The need for 50% of the 2nd Upper ticket is the slight sticking point as I am only Red.
However, have just spotted that the VS 2-4-1 voucher can be used on a cash ticket. Would I be correct in thinking that this means I pay for one Upper ticket and then just the taxes/charges on the 2nd ticket?
Has anyone done this and do the call centre staff understand this? How much are the taxes/charges on the 2nd ticket?
Any other ways I could this to maximise my spend – I just about have the Avios & Virgin Points for my original options to fly out BA Club and back on VS Upper but could top up either if it makes financial sense. I do not currently have a BA Amex 2-4-1 voucher.
In my experience, even on cash UC bookings you still need the 50% of the points as well. You can probably see the rough taxes cost by doing a dummy booking for an UC ticket for BGI-LHR.
I think the other option is to buy premium for cash and use the VS voucher to upgrade to UC. You dont then need the extra points, but whether its “worth” it may depend on prices. At least summer is not peak season for Caribbean.
One-way tickets are usually extortionate.
As above, you can use the voucher to upgrade to UC for the difference in taxes. I have just done this – booked 2 x PE NAS-LHR, then called VS who applied the voucher to upgrade us both to UC. The extra tax was $173 pp, which felt very reasonable.
There are a couple of helpful threads here about calling VS to get your seats as soon as they’re released.
Summer demand can be high if you’re travelling in school holidays, so bear that in mind!
Cheers – would seriously consider booking one cash return (relatively flexible on dates) and then use the 2-4-2 voucher for the other ticket if the cash price is reasonable & then the extra taxes are ok (and there is no 50% points needed as well!)
NorthernLass – that sounds ideal. So you booked PE online first & then called VS? Assuming there were reward seats available in Upper for this to work?
Yes – NAS has good availability generally but I was fixed to a specific return date so I booked 2 x PE with points via the app when I got up on the morning they were released, then about 8.30 called VS and got through straight away. The agent was very good and booked the 2 UC seats for us very quickly. He sent an email link for the extra payment, so I just paid that as soon as it arrived and got the booking confirmation soon after that.
You could just do the whole thing on the phone but my reasoning was that if all the UC seats did go straight away we’d still be coming home, just in PE!
