Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club 241 and Barclays Upgrade

Would appreciate some advice on this as I feel like I might be missing something.

I’m looking at booking LHR to KUL next year (2 adults, off peak, business class) and have a BAPP 241 and a Barclays Upgrade voucher.

From what I can see, using the 241 on a return will be 220k avios and £1250.
However, if I was to use the Barclays upgrade on the outbound and the 241 on the inbound, it would be 220k avios and £1077 (made up of outbound premium economy avios 110k and cash £625; and 241 business inbound 110k avios and £374).

    Does that sound right?

If it does, is it sensible? I would be losing half the 241, but saving £200. This trip will clear me out of avios and I don’t accure them that quickly, so I won’t have anything else planned after this for a while.

    Thanks

My maths says 625 + 374 = 999, but apart from that the numbers seem correct, as it’s one of the routes where the inbound taxes are significantly lower than the outbound.

If you are happy you won’t use the Barclays voucher for anything else then you are getting £251 for it, which is much better than nothing. You would obviously have two separate bookings.

In principle you could still use the other half of the 241 later should you acquire enough avios.

You could book the 2 legs separately and benefit from the lower taxes just using the 241. As long as you book the inbound at T-355, and it wasn’t released at the time you booked the outbound, BA will refund the extra 50% avios you spend.

This needs to be done online, and you will have to have the full amount of avios you need in your account.

Thanks, helpful to confirm that that’s the trade. No idea where the £1077 came from!

On the 50% refund process, I thought that the 241 only worked for a return booked as a return and that adding the 2nd leg on later meant it would get priced as a return. Unfortunately I haven’t got enough avios to do that anyway!

If you add it to the inbound then yes the taxes are re-calculated. If you book the inbound separately you can usually get away getting the avios refunded and leaving the trip on 2 PNRs.
