Update on this – got the avios back this morning via the twitter route. Thanks for this suggestion worked very well.
I’d had no response to my message for a week and was thinking about chasing but got a positive response first thing this morning and a refund of the avios.

I just received 50% of Avios back on the return leg of an open jaw return where I’d used 241 on the outward leg. I started a thread a couple of weeks ago.
On the phone they refused, but it worked through Twitter DM: It took over a week for them to reply to initial enquiry and almost another week to tell me (today) that I had been refunded – but looking at account the Avios went back 5 days ago.
