Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club 241 redemption to Cancun

  • 38 posts

Just looking at options to use my 241 voucher on, I’m a little confused with taxes I did post this in the daily thread but thought I would start a topic to keep it from being closed

We want to go to cancun but there is no business or first reward seats so what we are looking at doing is flying from LHR to LAX first class and then book internal flights to cancun then again to New York and fly home first class again.

If I put in a return to and from new York in first the taxes are £858 and the same with LAX

But if I put in 1 way flights the taxes come out much higher, am I right in saying if I called up the taxes should be the £858 per person for LHR-LAX and JFK-LHR?

We are not set in stone with New York but have only 155k Avios this would cover first for all flights rather than having to buy more to fly home business class from elsewhere making the total cost more. Pity you still can’t avoid high fees from Inverness as we are only 2 hours away, open to suggestions on routes and advice with fees, I have read the articles but still a little confused, cheers

I put several responses on the chat thread which answer quite a lot of this, not sure if you went back there. You will have to contact BA at some point to book this and they will recalculate the fees – they do fluctuate but you can get a good idea from the dummy booking for LHR-JFK return.

I think there used to be savings starting in INV but I can’t remember if this is the case now? You could also consider starting in DUB, which would bring the price down quite a bit.

I did post this in the chat, but have you remembered to check flights to and from CUN with the voucher in case there’s extra CW availability? There are different ratios of cash and avios you can use.

Lastly, you would be well advised to book your outbound F seats asap as someone else could snap them up at any point.

SeatSpy is showing plenty of CW availability direct to CUN at the end of Feb. I don’t think there will be an F cabin on this route, though.

Yeah it seems there are plenty going there but nothing coming home, I did see your replies thank you

I think getting it cheaper from Inverness was scrapped not too long ago, I haven’t checked club world as the 241 just got triggered today so waiting for it to appear

What I meant was you could go direct to CUN in CW if that’s easier than going via LAX. Unless you really want to go to LA, you could use what you’d spend on the connecting flights to top up your avios. Then return from NYC in F if that still appeals.

When you get the voucher, see what it throws up for CUN-LGW.

Have you looked at flying via DFW – it’s a lot closer than LAX and often has F availability. There are also lots of AA flights from DFW to CUN and pretty good Avios availability

    Little update on this,

How long does it take for the 241 voucher to go into the account?

Once it is in I will have enough Avios to book the flight to LA, I’m waiting on Barclays card bonus so looks like I won’t have the Avios for the return leg until they deposit Avios on July 2nd

Would you book the LA flight now with companion and call up in July and book New York or wait for both to become available?

If I did it this way would taxes be higher initially but when it comes to booking the New York leg it wouldn’t be as high?

Usually within 48 hours. If you book your outbound leg in F separately, it’s unlikely that BA will recalculate the taxes in your favour if you then want to book F on the inbound as well as they’ll say it could have been done all in one go (despite you not having enough avios). This won’t apply if you book in a cabin with RFS fares. This is why it’s so important to do all the research.

Personally, the first thing I would check when you get the voucher is whether it opens up extra CW availability to CUN – unless you want the F experience enough to put up with the inconvenience of go via the US both ways. Even if you have to pay a higher cash option, this will probably only cancel out what you’d be paying to fly in F.

By way of example, if you found CW availability to CUN with the voucher, you could pay 152,000 avios plus about £1300 for both of you.

We are actually planning to spend some time in America before and after cancun so this was the reasons behind it, both flights I am looking at is RFS rates but obviously don’t want to get stung with more taxes than needed

I don’t even know if it’s possible but maybe a option would be if someone can transfer me Avios and I can transfer them back once mine comes in July?

It doesnt work like that and liable for spectacular failure but if your in need of 150,000 the least I would expect someone to take as collateral is £1,500 in cold hard smackeroonies.

Need like 25k and I was meaning a friend, quite sure the fee to transfer is £50,

So £100 rather than waiting or buying Avios

There’s no RFS on F flights (yet), I’m not sure why you keep saying this?!

You still have the option of booking with fewer avios/more cash in F.

If you have, say, a parent with avios, you could add them to your HHA (or create one) which would allow you to use their avios, even if they’re not travelling with you.

The RFS logo came up but after a second look it is just for the ABZ-LHR flight

So we have now decided that we will just do cancun return

There seems to be plenty business seats outbound but they get snapped up quite quick inbound

Can I book outbound now and call up and book inbound when released? Looking at maybe 15th may – 29th may, is there admin fees to pay doing it this way?

Only other issue we have is for the return leg when the flight gets released for 29th, we have a stop over in London and fly home 31st so this seats to glasgow wouldn’t be released yet, would it be the case of waiting the 2 days after release and hoping everything is still available ?

It’s literally all in here and other similar threads. I’m pretty sure there’s a HFP article as well if you have a look at the avios university series.
