Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Forums Other Destination advice 2nd August 2027 Total Solar Eclipse

  • 263 posts

Having decided to leave the 2026 eclipse in favour of 2027, I thought I’d start a thread on destinations.

Gibraltar? Yes it’s not fully maximising the totality but easy to get to. Potential cloud cover should me minimal I think?

I was thinking about this. You might be unlucky and get the Levanter cloud and also it might be very busy and (even more) expensive in August (especially if they’ve joined Schengen by then). Nice T3 departure from LHR though (unless that changes). So I’m thinking probably not.

I should think the professionals will be based at Luxor. If you stand in the temple at Karnak you are less than 10 miles from the centre line, 6 mins 24 of totality and 0% chance of cloud. Heaven. If only it wasn’t hot as hell. Plenty of well air-conned hotels around though. Step outside for totality and it will probably still be 30 degrees with no sun.
I am intending to watch from near Sfax (Tunisia). I’m going to spend a week or so visiting classical sites and a few days on a side tour to Star Wars filming locations. Sacrificing 40 seconds or so for more manageable temperature.
Gibraltar 4 mins 30 and 16% average cloud cover. To put that in perspective, the average cloud is less than anywhere on next year’s track and the time of totality is still longer than most eclipses.

I linked to this site on the other thread, but I find it very useful.

We had a wonderful fortnight wandering around the Carthaginian and Roman sites in and around Tunis nearly 30 years ago, always wanted to see more but maybe not in August!

Tangier also looks a good bet, I think it’s fairly accessible by ferry from Spain.

I know what you mean, but since I’ll be there anyway…
