Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club 5th freedom flights

  • 397 posts

Anyone successfully booked a 5th freedom flight with Virgin lately? Last year I was told this was possible but I’ve now just been told it’s not. There aren’t any return reward flights to Grenada at the moment for next Feb but there are to Barbados. Barbados is the 90 min stop over on their route to GND. Was going to book to Barbados and then onwards in cash if the price was right. However, they’re saying they don’t do that. They definitely told me this was possible before.

Does Virgin actually have 5th freedom rights on this route?

Well, I assumed they did seeing as they fly from BGI-GND and I was previously told I could book it separately to LHR-BGI.

Just because they fly it doesn’t mean they have the right to sell tickets – there are some European hops like this where tickets are not sold (ie people get off but no-one gets on for the final bit).

That said, BA always had the rights and the Caribbean islands are very likely to welcome all the air traffic they can get.

A quick search on the Virgin website to see if you can actually buy a ticket would answer the question though.

Yes of course, and that was indeed the first thing I did. No joy, so I rang VA. Thought there was an outside chance I had an un-enlightened agent on the phone (told me she was new). Just strange that they told me previously they did this. Bit of a shame but least I know. Thanks both.

    Could you connect from ATL?

Even if poss that would significantly add to the overall flight time and rule it out for me.
