Forums Payment cards American Express Additional card bonus

  • 44 posts

    hi,

I’m going to need to add my first additional cardholder (amex platinum) at some point in the next six months (sort of flexible around timing) and I’d like to maximise the bonus, which is currently 5,000 points. I’m not sure what the usual range is and whether it varies individually or if it’s the same for everyone.

I’ve read that it can go up to 10k but again I’m not sure if that’s likely to be offered again or what the potential floor is either (is 5k as low as it goes? or do i risk it going lower if i wait?)

any advice/insight will be much appreciated, thanks!

I think 5k is the floor on Platinum, so it might be worth waiting for an enhanced offer, as it has been 10k in the past, however not sure how often the supplementary card has bonus offers.

FWIW, my mum just got 6k MR for adding me as a supplementary for her new Gold card yesterday. The standard bonus is 3k, and the enhanced offer was supposed to end on 21st May, but she still got 6k.

Trying to add a supp and the app or web page presents the BAPP as the only option to add a supp to! Suppose I’ll have to call them?

So I finally decided to ring up American Express. It took several attempts getting the rep to understand that the link from my email for a MR rewards card supplementary card holder bonus only took me to a page for the BAPP with no opportunity to change the card type.
After a lengthy delay I am told there is no such offer and that I can only add a supplementary card to my BAPP, this after supposedly several internal calls.
Quite exasperating, so made a complaint. What an utter shambles Amex CS is nowadays.

Have you selected your Platinum card in the top right corner before clicking the link?

How often do these bonus points typically take to post? I added a supplementary cardholder a couple of weeks ago (using the link in the direct marketing offering bonus points) but nothing showing on the account yet.

Referral bonuses seem to post almost immediately these days but do these take a while?

It’s been a couple of years since I held an Amex, but the additional card points usually appeared as soon as the card was approved.

As a datapoint, I chatted with Amex about the bonus and they said I’m not eligible as I’d received it in 2023.

My guess is it counts as having had it before on the same account as I went Platinum > ARRC for 2 years > Platinum upgrade while keeping the same card number.

So my fallow period was up last month. July 1st – applied for the gold MR card, approved immediately and OH’s 12k referral points appeared that day. The physical card arrived in the post the next day. This not being my first Amex rodeo, I then applied for a supp card for OH, and the 3k referral points for that were showing in my account a few minutes later.

I hope Amex are as prompt with my 35k points SUB when the time comes!

Supplementary platinum card arrived today for my other half to use. Do I need to activate it in my Amex app, or does she need to download the app and authorise? Its not clear from the letter.

    Thanks!

@Nuno your partner has to activate it in her own Amex account.
