Forums Other Car rental Advice on Alamo car hire Glasgow

  • 40 posts

    Hi

It’s the first time hiring a car here in the U.K. (we live in the U.K.) and are looking at hiring a car with Alamo from Glasgow airport

Included is their damage waiver but they are also offering excess protection at £80? Is this needed?

I also have an Amex platinum card so not sure if I’m covered with this for car hire ?

I can’t remember if the platinum insurance covers UK hire. If not, consider taking a top up policy if the excess is very high – it can be £2k or more, often buried in the small print! We get an annual top up policy for European hire where high excesses are common. I did hire a car at GLA last year, it’s a really easy airport to navigate, very short walk from the terminal to the rental offices and then very easy to drive to wherever you’re going.

@iandv – the Amex Plat does indeed cover you in the UK for car hire, as set out in the policy definition of a trip.

“Trip” means a journey outside Your Country of Residence which must commence and end in Your Country
of Residence, or a journey within Your Country of Residence which must include a flight, or at least one night of pre-booked accommodation away from home. Trip is extended to include any journey within Your Country of Residence for Car Rental Benefits (Section 1.5) only. Trips must not exceed 90 consecutive days with a maximum 240 days during each 12 month period.

So we live in the UK and are flying to Glasgow from London. We need to hire a car to get back and forth to Edinburgh where we are staying with family.

Does this mean I’m not covered with the Amex platinum insurance ? If so can anyone recommend any alternatives, it’s only for 5 days

Well the OP doesn’t specifically say if they’re flying or using “pre-booked accommodation” …

Rob has done various articles on the Amex Plat and IIRC there was one which covered the hire car insurance in some depth but I can’t find it!

Sorry, you beat me to it. I would think that you actually are covered, and I have a feeling that it would cover your excess but you’d need to double check this.

Yes we are flying from London to Glasgow but we don’t have pre booked accommodation as we are driving to Edinburgh from Glasgow to stay with family

From the Ts & Cs posted by @JDB, it’s either/or, so you should be okay.

There are several threads on the Amex plat insurance on this site, including one which seems to have reappeared in the past few hours, so it might be worth looking at those as well.

The policy terms don’t require you to have any pre-booked accommodation for the car hire section (but you do need the pre-booked accommodation for any other section).

I wonder if going from England to Scotland is considered as “a journey outside your Country of Residence”? It would be interesting to see what the definition of country is that they are using.
