Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Advice on both cards

  • 38 posts

I haven’t got any cards at the moment, I’m wondering if the best way to maximise sign up offers and if it would be possible would be

Sign up to BA premium plus card (50k avios) and use this as much as I can, but also sign up to the Barclays premium one (25k bonus) and after a few months downgrade to the free one

Use the Amex as much as I can but when not available use my free Barclays one, questions are

Does this maximise my sign up rewards?
Is it possible to downgrade on Barclays and keep the sign up offer?

    Cheers

You can definitely have both at the same, you’d need to trigger the SUB before downgrading though. Also see the thread further up the page about selecting the upgrade voucher before making any changes!

When you say you don’t have any cards at the moment, have you had any American Express for the last 24 months? If no then I would start with either the nectar, or Marriott card then move onto the British Airways premium or the platinum card. at the moment the latter doesn’t have any uplift in bonus.

You need to read Rob’s post on maxing bonus. You will learn more than just posting for help.

How much spend do you have coming up? Because all of the signup bonus adds up to quite a lot of spend. I would suggest holding off on the Barclays card and see if there are any bonus uplift but basically one card at a time, especially since it sounds like you are a bit of a newbie.

I think this is Rob’s post on maximising points for folk who have never had an Amex. Unfortunately for me I didn’t find it till after I started my points journey, by getting Amex Gold.
