My brother, sister and law, and two nephews are stuck in Frankfurt en route to CPT. They were due to fly EDI-FRA-CPT last night. A drone meant LH had to initially divert and they missed flight. LH say no alternative routing available (QR and EK allegedly full). My brother has been put on tonight’s flight. The remaining 3 are waitlisted and basically are being told they will be put on Sat night flight if not tonight. So would then be 48 hours late. Am I right no realistic compensation because of drone for first 24 hours? Anything that can be done about making three wait 48 hours for routing if that happens?
I think you are right that LH will be able to claim ‘extraordinary circumstances’ owing to drone activity at FRA.
In respect of the three who may or may not get onto tonight’s flight, there’s no extra compensation, irrespective of the length of delay (or indeed even if LH didn’t reroute at the earliest opportunity) but LH will remain liable to cover hotel, food and telecommunication charges until they get everyone on a new flight. New EC261 rights do attach to the new flights, but hopefully won’t be needed.
Any cancellation costs incurred in SA owing to the late arrival would be a matter for insurance.
It’s fairly remarkable that FRA hasn’t put up drone defences as LHR has.
Anyway, fingers crossed that everyone does get on a flight tonight; it’s all getting more difficult as flights are so busy.
As per @JDB – hope they get sorted!
Have they checked if there are actually any seats on other carriers?
Thanks all- genuinely appreciated.
Looked to me some EK seats but that seems to be denied…
Just a suggestion, a more meaningful thread title might’ve got more people to bother looking at the thread.
They are technically breaching the legislation by refusing to re-route them “at the earliest convenience” (if there are seats on other flights) but it depends on whether they’re up for a fight, maybe through a German court. I feel like I’ve read on here previously that LH are very difficult to deal with in cases like this.
I had a bunch of colleagues caught up in this heading back to Singapore and apparently EK did not physically have any seats to accommodate rerouted passengers today (presumably they’re willing to sell and then bump some poor soul off!)
They managed to get rerouted via India today which wasn’t too bad
One suggestion is to get them on the waitlist to Jo’burg – that is a 747 so more likely for something to come up. Or FRA-DOH-JNB-CPT has seats in economy
