  • 11 posts

I have 24,064 flying blue miles, of which 22,064 are due to expire on 1/07/25.

Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be flying before then.
I know it’s not a massive amount, but I’d like to preserve them for when I could fly again.

Do you have any suggestions that would not involve flying, please?

Link your account to Accor and stay at an Accor hotel.

Transfer Amex MR points into Flying Blue.

Buy something through the Flying Blue e-store.

Does transferring mr points from Amex to Flying blue work?
I tried transferring points from Accor, but it didn’t extend the validity of the existing FB miles.

Flying Blue expiry rules are a bit convoluted and hope others will correct me if I’m wrong. AFAIK: If you acquired the miles through flight activity then I believe you normally have to take another flight to stop them expiring. But if you acquired the flights through non-flight activity (e.g. Amex or Accor transfer) then it may be possible to keep them alive with another transfer (which is what I’ve now being doing for more than 5 years).

2000 of the miles were a recent transfer from Accor, which I thought might extend the validity of the main 22,064.
It seems that this didn’t work as only they (2000) show an an expiry of 2027
The other 22,064 were from a paid ticket in business to the French Caribbean in June 2023 and show an expiry of July 2025.

Would like to preserve them until I can use, but still not clear if this is possible, or how?

I have Amex Points that I can transfer, but would this just repeat the Accor experience?

Have you actually read the scheme rules?

They will give chapter and verse on what will and what won’t extend validity and those depend on whether you have FB status or not.

Afraid the answer is almost certainly yes. Since those were miles earning through flying, seems likely they can only be extended by taking another flight.

I’m struggling to make sense of the meaning of the T&C’s, but as a flight is probably not an option, would a cheap stay in an acccor hotel work?
Also I saw mention of buying miles, would that work?

Another option is a status match if its still open as having status means points don’t expire.

I can confirm that transferring a small amount of American Express MR points does not extend the validity of miles earned from flights, although it does extend the validity of the Miles earned from elsewhere.

    I can’t link directly to the program terms, but this is the relevant section copied;

How long are my Miles valid?

All your Miles are valid for life as long as you take an eligible flight on Air France, KLM or other airline partners at least once every 2 years, or if you’re an Elite or Elite Plus member, or if you make a purchase with an eligible co-branded credit card at least once every 2 years. These “Overall extending activities” extend the validity of all Miles 2 years from the date of the activity.

You can also extend the validity of Miles earned with all other partners (car rental partners, hotel partners, and experience partners) for 2 years by earning Miles with any of these other partners. These “Partial extending activities” with other partners will extend the validity of Miles earned with any of these other partners by 2 years from the date of the activity. Please note, “Partial extending activities” do not extend the validity of Miles earned from “Overall extending activities”.

If you have no linked card such as a local Amex then I’d do some work in Google flights and take a flight, this seems the only certain way. Unless you can use them to book a flexible or at least changeable ticket as far out as poss with the aim of amending the date to a nearer one you can actually fly that routing on. Don’t expect to be able to refund it after the miles have expired, nor change the route.

Worked for me with Miles&More which is just as difficult on the expiry of miles.
