You can buy non-Apple airtags (eg Tile) and they work the same. Actually some better as have longer range and replaceable batteries. Apple devices are “auto-enabled” vs Android requiring an app/opt-in, though I think this has changed with Google’s “Find my device”

I think both are equally useful – eg to know whether your bag made it onto the plane. I imagine most airport staff are encouraged to use both systems.

Have used the Tile tags and they work well (even in a car/train). Not sure they’ll help you locate your lost luggage, but at least you know the general whereabouts. And for me, if the bag is still in LHR I won’t have to look like a lemon at the baggage belt. £50 for 2, what’s not to like?!

Used 4 of the Samsung product earlier in the year and now use one as a key-ring to find keys / phone interchangeably.

Overall the Samsung version worked pretty well, but I have no way of comparing to the Apple version. When we arrived in Frankfurt, it did seem to suggest one of our bags was above Croatia. With the airline apps confirming if your bag is loaded/in the system etc. I am not sure if these are vital. However if it was actually lost and didn’t arrive on the carousel they may have come into their own.

The question relates to sharing the information with BA

I see, sorry. Is the sharing with BA a new/recent thing? Is it a constant share, or the ability to share in the event of missing baggage?

It’s a new protocol that allows you to create a link and share it with an airline in the event that your luggage goes AWOL. The link allows you to track the location. Of the missing item for up to a week, or when it’s returned to the owner, or when the owner decides to terminate the link.
