Well this is a bit of a strange one for me, basically due to a miscommunication around dates I find myself without the family car for two days. Pulling up expedia shows a plethora of companies with prices ranging from £7 to £40 per day for a Fiat 500.

I’ve got Hertz and Avis, but they both are on the high side, so the question is does anyone have experiences with the lower cost renters // are there any that should be avoided. I’d rather avoid also any that are off-site and am pretty certain that some that expedia state are counter and car at the terminal aren’t.

    Cheers

Europcar and others who are owned by Europcar are to be avoided.

Auto Europe broker sometimes has good prices for Hertz/Thrifty.

    Just at Alicante, or generally?

Europcar are my regular go-to company at Geneva and I’ve had 3 rentals with them in Thailand, 10+ rentals the past few years and haven’t had a single problem.

I did my “due diligence” a couple of years ago
My conclusion was avoid Firefly and Goldcar
Eventually went with Centauro and they have been fine on half a dozen occasions

but to be fair you will find horror stories about most Spanish car hire firms on the net inc the Big ones

Just make sure you have excess insurance

    Thanks have Amex Plat.

You’ve also hit the nail squarely on the head – everyone has a bad experience with each firm, be it Firefly (which is supposed to be Hertz), Goldcar, Record, Budget, Sixt. I’ve used Hertz before and they were fine, but this time their rates are just under a 100 euros for two days. Centauro is £13 !

Record Go and Centauro on airport are both good for Alicante

I normally use Drivalia at Alicante – typically 2 to 3 times a year. Yes, they are off airport but have a shuttle bus every 5-10 minutes maximum and about a 3 minute journey. Never a queue to collect the car and you’re in the car within a minute after completing documentation – unlike the walk from the terminal to the car park for terminal operators. Fuel policy is full to full with any shortfall payable on return. Unlike Centauro which take a €100 fuel deposit (not a credit card block) and reimburse you if you return it full. If you’re credit card is in sterling you lose out both ways in the currency conversion.

Another vote for Centauro – 6 hires and no real problems
but queues can be long and desk is a long way from cars so on the one occasion I had a problem – no spare – it was a long walk back but the swapped it very quickly

I used to think Record Go was fine at ALC, but never again.

The last time I used them, after checking over the car I noticed chunks of rubber coming off the tyres. They then swapped the car to one with a handbrake that even Hulk Hogan wouldn’t have been able to shift. It was seized up. Going back a 3rd time, at almost midnight, the agent was getting irate and looking to blaming me for their mistakes, saying why was I still there?!

The 3rd car was ok, but then Record fiddled me on the fuel deposit going back. Virgin refunded the missing part of the deposit after several months to and fro as a chargeback.

Now I only use Ok Rent a Car. Fine so far
