Forums Payment cards American Express Amax Platinum Insurance – is extending hotel stay due to illness covered?

  • 48 posts

I’d appreciate an advice from those who have experienced something similar.
I had a severe case of food poisoning on Saturday, which prevented us from leaving as planned on Sunday. I had to sick medical help which I claimed for now. I also extended our hotel stay by a day and the car rental, as I wasn’t in a condition to drive to the airport.
After reviewing the Europ Assistance website, it appears that these expenses (hotel, car rental) are not covered, which is quite disappointing.

@Nomad – under 1.1.9 you should have some cover (only £150 day) to extend your stay subject to prior agreement by Amex who will likely require a certificate/letter from a doctor or hospital saying you weren’t fit to travel. You need to call the claims team to clarify the position/seek approval.

It’s a disappointing and very non ‘platinum’ policy in many regards!

More importantly, I hope you recover quickly.

Try. I have been always happy with them.
Travel disruptions due to illness work.
Few months ago, when I was travelling I had an awful tummy bug, had to cancel some train tickets abroad. And got a full refund. And I had no proof for my illness. But, total cost was <£100, which made it easier I am sure.

In new Europ Assistance portal that is the insurer from 2025 there is no such thing as “Travel disruption”

The section you need to claim for – extended stay following illness is under part 1.1.9 of the medical section.

I fell ill in Cairo last year – I was too ill to contact Amex ahead of time so I just extended my stay at the hotel by a day and paid with my Platinum. When I got back to the UK I submitted a claim to Amex showing the additional hotel night + a note from the doctor. They processed it and refunded without question.
