I’m considering paying $200 for Ambassador status ahead of a New York trip later in the year. My understanding is that I can book the Ambassador weekend stay ahead of joining, I just need to have the certificate when I check in.
Does that suggest there is no reason to pay for Ambassador until shortly before my trip (assuming I will not use other benefits in the meantime)? How long do I need to give IHG to process my application and issue the certificate? Is it a paper certificate or just an electronic one lodged in my account?
Sorry for the newbie questions but I am a newbie to Ambassador status! Thanks.
I think certificate comes immediately when you buy Amb.
Amb status shows up pretty much as soon as you buy.

Yes and yes. Certs are electronic and show in your account online.
Thanks. So no downside in waiting to buy Ambassador if I will not use other benefits in the meantime?

None, other than it’s not a great program. Other than the defined benefits you won’t get anything on top, and you’ll find that AMB weekend prices are higher than best available. Of course!
But you should get decent value.
