I am currently ihg silver and thinking about ambassador. I have a family holiday booked in the summer in an Iberostar resort.
Is my calculation correct?
Silver, if I spend $10k I get 120k points, with ambassador I would get 160k points so would be worth while just for the extra points alone (if I paid 25k points for ambassador).
IC Ambassador costs $225 or 45k iHG points
Ambassador doesn’t get you any bonus points but the Platinum status that comes with it does.
Plat gets 60% bonus points based on the qualifying spend.
$10k (exc tax) is 100k base points.
Platinum gets 60% bonus.
Ambassador is 45k.
So, yes, you are 15,000 points up AND Platinum might get you a small upgrade on your stay. You’ve then got all of the other Ambassador benefits too for future trips.
No need to decide until about 2 weeks before travel though.
BTW the booking in your account will show you what the base earnings for the booking are and a separate line for the bonus points based on your current statute and takes into account you only earn on the base cost excluding taxes.
Ah it’s 45k points. Still, based on my calculations it seems to be worth it. Will definitely register a couple of weeks before travel to maximise the time of being platinum.
Thanks all, have a lovely weekend

Ah yes. Thank you. Seems like I’ll get around 130k base points so getting ambassador would be a good bet.

I usually don’t pay attention to this, but did towards the end of last year when I was aiming to get just above 120k to renew diamond.
I found the estimated earnings to be wildly inaccurate even after poring over historical exchange rates to try and work out where the numbers came from. However, overall it tended to be in my favour (i.e. the estimates were typically lower than what I should have/actually earned).
