Morning all!
I booked a ‘2 double classic garden view’ room at the IC Malta. Prior to arrival, I was upgraded on the app to a ‘2 double classic club garden view’ room. At check in, it was confirmed that I had been upgraded to a club room.
However, when I tried to access the club lounge, I was denied entry. Reception informed me that although I was upgraded to a club room, this did not include club access. From looking at the room types on the IHG website, I believe that the only difference between the room I booked and the club room is club access!
I am Ambassador and paid with cash.
Can I please check if this is ‘correct’? Interested to hear the thoughts/experiences of others. Thanks
Some hotels don’t give you club access unless you’ve originally booked a club room initially. You could take it up with the hotel or IHG about why you don’t seem to have been given an actual room upgrade, but they might say something like the club rooms are on higher floors and that would technically constitute the upgrade!
If you want to guarantee lounge access as an Amb you need to book the lowest club room, unless agreed before arriving. That’s part of the reason why I stopped bothering

Reception advised that I had been given an upgrade – “improved amenities” and “higher floor”. Nonsense, IMHO!
I did email their “Director of Cluster Operations’ (his business card was left in my room). In fairness, he replied promptly advising that “there must have been a miscommunication from our end” and arranged access.

That’s good service recovery, but discretionary rather than the rule we’ve come to know.
The club rooms usually have a higher standard of decor and a Nespresso machine, which is an upgrade in InterContinental’s book. Always look for ‘with lounge access’ included in the room description.
