Forums Other Flight changes and cancellations help American Airlines Oneworld Ruby free bag

Has anybody successfully used this for UK/Europe to USA? Looks like it would save a decent amount of £ for a basic trip UK to USA.

Policy says that Oneworld Ruby gets a free bag. I’m guessing this means that Basic Economy gets a free bag, but standard Economy already has 1 bag, so doesn’t get an extra one.

AA website has *some* info on what you’re entitled to on different types of flights. Possibly if you had an allowance of 1 bag, Ruby would get you 1 extra, but I haven’t flown long haul with them for over 20 years!

I also asked re AA the other day – does status-related baggage allowance extend to other pax on the booking? Previous posts have suggested that it does but again that’s something the AA website doesn’t make clear!

It does say first checked bag is free for OW Ruby on TA flights, which suggests you could book Basic Economy on AA (which I didn’t know was a thing except for BA!) and get the allowance.

I can’t remember what the rule is when it’s BA on Basic Economy – is it checked bag or free seat selection that you can’t have, regardless of status?

Sorry I’m not being more helpful here, but going off what the AA website actually says, you should get one bag!

*I’m currently sat at FLL with a 4 hour delay so plenty of time of my hands for this stuff. The WiFi is excellent 😂

Indeed, the website looks pretty clear that Transatlantic Basic Economy would not get a free bag normal, but OW Ruby allows a free bag, so would essentially allow a Basic Economy fare to have a checked bag.

I believe normal basic economy (BA, VS, UA, etc.) is essentially no free baggage, no free seat selection (laughs in BA), and much more limited changes or points earning.

But if AA with OW Ruby allows a free bag in Basic Economy, that’s an outstanding perk if somebody doesn’t care about seat selection (might even be possible with status too – I haven’t checked). I had a quick look an Std Eco vs Basic Eco looks to be around £120 difference for a generic TATL flight. That’s a very good saving in my opinion.

Hope your FLL flight gets sorted 😊. It isn’t AA by any chance, is it 😂?!

Nope, Silver Airways – much worse rep than AA 🤦🏻‍♀️😂. At least AA normally do the messaging around a few months out, IME!
