  • 3 posts

i I received an e mail a couple of days ago advising me that all my personal and business amex cards will be cancelled in 2 months time
No explanation was given , I got 2 months notice , I have paid all my bills on time from the correct accounts as I know that amex do not like a payment from a biz account being paid to a personal card and visa versa , I run everything by the book, I have asked for the reason why and they will not tell me , I am being charged guilty for an offence , the problem is I don’t know the offence , I am unable to defend myself , has anyone else had this issue , furthermore they have cancelled my merchant number , with zero notice , very upsetting
Not a great way to treat a customer

Well your abuse of the comma is certainly criminal.

Since this relates to a merchant account I am not sure how much help others can offer here, which is very much a consumer travel forum.

One of the most common issues if you have a merchant account is to use any Amex card, business or personal, via that account. An absolute no no.

Amex has no legal obligation to tell you why they have closed your accounts and won’t volunteer anything they don’t need to tell you.

When we have seen previous stories of account closures here, there’s usually been more to the story than initially posted.

Does that include any additional cardholders?

Yes, the primary cardholder is responsible financially, legally and contractually for all the actions of the supplementary cardholder and use of that supplementary card is subject to the primary cardholder agreement.

I would suggest you read back on the previous threads on account closures both on here and all over the net. It’s always “I have no idea” then it’s “I don’t know if it could have been this?” And yes “it’s that”.

Is there a suggestion here an Amex merchant is using their own cards on the merchant account?

    What could go wrong?!?

Not *always*, I did everything that I could to find out and am still none the wiser.

@kirchy if you discover the cancellation reason please come back and share it here, it may help someone. If you’re concerned how to pay for future companion voucher trips without your own Amex, I was offered the chance to use someone else’s – thank you :), I won’t post your @name here – which ran into trouble when I called to book a redemption that required a call as the BA agents insisted that it had to be an Amex in my name, contrary to the guidance here/voucher T&Cs, but it worked fine online to clear my remaining vouchers.

@Metty – in fact the @zapato1060 comment was pretty accurate! After you initially reported your account closure here, you subsequently disclosed a number of other pieces of information which others agreed would be reasons for closure. Of course you are “none the wiser” about the specific reasons for your immediate account suspension then closure, because Amex had no legal obligation to tell you and for very obvious reasons the firm doesn’t want to tell you; it would be madness and lead to all sorts of trouble.

You do however, have the protection of appealing to the FOS which you did and that decision was published and your complaint wasn’t upheld as the reasons for account closure confidentially provided to the FOS (per normal process) were deemed valid and thus not unfair in regulatory terms. There a quite a number of similar complaints and few are upheld as any firm is basically entitled to choose who it does business with as long as it doesn’t act unfairly or discriminate.

I think an element people may miss is that while the cardholder agreement sets out certain rules/terms and conditions that’s not the whole story as such text simply can’t cover all eventualities. There’s additionally what one could term a fair use policy and there are activities/(patterns of) transactions etc. which Amex doesn’t like and individually or cumulatively might lead to account closure.
