Forums Payment cards American Express Amex 24 months query

  • 14 posts

Hi! Think I know the answer to this but thought I’d ask. I’ve held the Barclaycard Avios for nearly 2 years, I previously had a Blue BA Amex which I cancelled when taking out the Barclaycard. I was planning on flipping again this year, get a new Amex sign up offer and cancel the Barclaycard.

I’ve had the BA email offer of 60,000 Avios for the Black BA Amex. Offer expires 11th June 2024

My credit file shows my old BA Amex “Account end date” 11 June 2022

Typical, quite literally 2 years. I’m assuming that if I apply for a new BA Amex on 11th June 2024 I will fall foul of the 24 month rule for new customers? Is my understanding correct?

I guess to be safest bet would be wait until July, take 20,000 for an Amex Gold and then wait for another BA sign up bonus?

Contact Amex chat and get the specific date you cancelled. You can then work from there.

It’s the date the account was closed not cancelled that matters.

This isn’t just being pedantic on a word choice. There is a real difference between the two.

You could cancel an account today but it won’t be closed until you’ve paid off any outstanding balance which could be in two weeks time and then AMEX has to close the account.

People have been caught out on that having applied based on the cancelled date rather than the closed date so lost any sign up bonuses

You need to ask AMEX the date the account was actually closed.

Rather than cancel the Barclaycard, I would downgrade to the free one (if you haven’t already). I find it so useful for places where Amex isn’t accepted, plus works well with Curve for Fx spend.

I think it’s been over a year since the Barclaycard had an enhanced bonus, and Rob previously mentioned they are moving away from huge SUB’s, so you might not get anything more than 25k if that’s why you’re thinking to cancel the Barclaycard.

I’m in the tricky area that Amex cannot find the BAPP card I closed just over 2 years ago. Not even the full card number has helped so I’ve had to send in a statement to prove I had the card so they can investigate further. They’ve managed to find other cards I closed 3/4/5/6 years ago, but just not the BAPP one.

Thanks for all the responses. I’ll get in touch with Amex.

Hard to know what’s to do for the best with the Barclaycard. I’m on the free one but still inclined to cancel it, for the potential of a sign up bonus in the future. I know it probably won’t be huge, but something is better than nothing. And without a spouse flipping Amex/Barclaycard is the only way to maximise any bonuses. I have a separate fee free Mastercard I use for overseas spending, and take it on the chin I don’t earn Avios.

Hmmm seem to be stuck with that. I can log into Amex, and it defaults to a page offering me their range of cards which makes sense as I have no active account. However when I go to Chat, it asks me login again, and when I do it defaults back to the No Card page. Just round and round. If I get chance I’ll call them in the week.

Would the date provided on the confirmation letter from Amex following a cancellation be reliable or would that be the cancellation date and account closure date could be later? I am in similar situation and the Amex chat has been absolutely unhelpful (card not linked to account anymore so can’t help). But I do still have that letter…

Would the date provided on the confirmation letter from Amex following a cancellation be reliable

This is the only date that counts. 100% reliable.

This made me check, and I do have my final statement and confirmation letter from Amex. “your account is cancelled from 11/06/2022“. So I think I would fall foul of the 24 months if I applied on 11/06/2024. Typical! For future reference for others, this date matches exactly the date on my credit report.

Similar situation, I cancelled the BAPP card early summer ’22, but didn’t make a note of the exact date, and am looking to reapply, but concerned about the 24 month period. I tried Amex chat on the website, and despite checking last 4 previous addresses, claim they have no record of me ever holding the card, but I should try phone help as they can sometimes “see more”. Called up and had a lovely chat, but essentially same result, as far as the system shows, I have never held the BAPP card.
Discussed the reapplying situation with the agent in regard to the 24 month gap, and she said she has added a note to the system that I have tried to find closure date of the account I claim to have had via chat and phone, but the system holds no record of it, so I SHOULD be eligible for a sign up bonus, but that if it is denied, to call back up and discuss it and hopefully the attempt by me and the note added would mean they would be able to manually adjust the bonus if necessary.
This is all slightly reassuring but ultimately not particularly watertight, so I checked my credit history to see if that held any details. Account history for a closed AMEX account is there, showing about average use until statement date of July ’22, the £0 payment in August’22, then £206 in September ’22 which sounds like it may have been a guaranteed booking perhaps held over from cancelling the card, but that is the last record of that account.
So the question is, do I apply now and hope the same system that the agents look at checks the history, and so I have never held the card, or do I hold out until September to allow for cleared payment of the August statement?
And, of course, how do AMEX have no history of an account I held for perhaps around 20 years?

If you’re not eligible computer will say no and the goodwill gesture won’t be 60k Avios probably £50 for your trouble.

But I’ve had a bonus before when I shouldn’t have so have to ask yourself if you feel lucky or not.

Sounds like you’re not eligible until atleast August … wait for the next one. Can’t find the cancellation letter?

@Not Long Now, they will miraculously find your closure date when it comes to paying out a SUB. As @TGLoyalty says any compensation won’t be worth it.

Check your credit file for an account closure date, they list it, may be called an “End Date”. Having just done a spot check I can second @bagand96 ‘s finding above that the date on the credit report matches the closure letter precisely.

Indeed, I think I’ll leave it and hope for a decent sign up bonus later in the year. Very odd no record found or it on their behalf though

Similar situation. Just had a chat with Amex, they could not find any record of my card. I cancelled on the 19th of May (made sure to keep a record) and according to my statements, I have received a pro rata refund of the annual fee on the same day. I understand this is my cancelling date, not Amex’s closure date. They could not tell me what the closure date was, the lady kept telling me it’s the 19th of May. The next best thing I can go with, is my statement from June 2022, which shows this refund as a credit transaction, and the sentences at the top: Your account is now closed. Please pay the oustanding balance immediately. This statement is dated 7th of June. I’ll go and apply for the new BAPP on the 8th, 3 days before the 60k promo deadline. Hopefully it’ll work out. Good thing I kept this statement assuming Amex will make it difficult for me to find out when I’m eligible for a SUB.

@ACK rather than keeping the statement the most important thing to keep (for future reference) is the letter they always send on closure. It will specifically quote the account closure date.

I was able to ask chat to look for the closure date of my last BA card. It took some time and they even found one in 2017 but did confirm my clo9sure was in March 2022. Their data seems patchy as it only easily shows them current cards held. Seems to have been a data purge as my account no longer shows older cards either

@SteveJ yeah, I didn’t keep that, so that wasn’t an option unfortunately. Will know better next time.
