Can someone confirm that I am correct in giving my friend the following advice – if they book using an Amex Premium voucher the actual ticket validity is 365 days from the date the ticket is issued – the fact that the voucher is available for use for 2 years does not affect the actual ticket validity. So for instance booking an outbound on 1 Jan would be valid for a return journey up to and including 31 Dec. I have made them aware that they have to book and travel the outbound journey on or before the expiry date.
They are adamant that they can book a trip of over 365 days because the voucher is applicable for up to 2 years from issue.
Voucher validity and ticket validity are two totally different things
You are right and your friend is wrong.
You can’t usually book a BA flight earlier than 355 days out so the fact the CV is valid for 2 years is irrelevant. All that means is that you have 2 years from the date you receive your companion voucher to book an outbound flight.
Ticket validity is a year from date of issue or one year from the date you first travelled using the ticket, as long as your first flight took place within a year of the ticket being issued. So in your example if you book a flight today 27 May 2025 for an outbound flight on 1 January 2026 the ticket is valid until 31 December 2026 as long as you actually fly on 1 January 2026
